Red Kite – 8th May

This morning, during the bird count, a Red Kite was seen. There was also a Jay and two Cuckoos. Eleven Garden Warblers and three Grasshopper Warblers were also heard. PS.

Bearded Tit – 18th October

This morning some Bearded Tits were heard calling in the Slurry Lagoon reed bed. Eight Golden Plover nearly joined the Lapwings on the Slurry Lagoon before flying off to the SE, a Brambling was seen on the Causeway and two Golden-eye flew around the site before landing on the Large Gravel Pit. Three flocks of Fieldfares flew through and there was a small arrival of Goldcrests. Four Chiffchaff were along the Ouse Dyke and also seen were several Redpoll, Siskins, a Mistle Thrush and a Jay. Willow Tit – 4th October

On the Patch Watch today, 69 species were seen, including Willow Tit, Pink-footed Geese, Jay, Hobby and Mistle Thrush. PS.

Pied Flycatcher – 12th April

This morning a lot of migrants were about and a Pied Flycatcher was found in the Boundary hedge. It later moved along the hedge to Willow Pond. There were also two Little Ringed Plovers on the Wader Scrape, two Common Terns in the Deep Pit, a Common Sandpiper on the river bank, two Yellow Wagtails on the Causeway and there were lots more warblers about including Willow, Sedge and Garden Warblers and Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs. There were a few Swallows and Sand Martins and one House Martin. Also seen were a Jay and a singing Treecreeper. PS.

Jay – 11th April

As we watched the terns trying to drive the Black-headed Gulls from the breeding platforms, more birds arrived in ones and twos. Soon there were nine flying around and they gained the upper hand. In the distance a Jay flew through, high above the valley. Five Grasshopper Warblers are now singing and more Reed and Sedge Warblers have arrived. PS.

Spotted Flycatcher – 22nd August

This morning as we walked along the Lower Path four Jays sneaked into the canopy of the ash trees while a a Buzzard called overhead. There were several immature Reed Warblers, Sedge Warblers, Blackcaps and Whitethroats and a Lesser Whitethroat and Willow Tit in the bushes between the path and the railway line. Near to the signal box a Spotted Flycatcher was perched on the wires and then in the hawthorn bushes, and a Stoat ran across the path. By the river the Swallows’ alarm calls alerted us to a Hobby. A Little Egret was seen briefly on the Slurry Lagoon and several Roesel’s Bush-crickets were found on the Causeway. By the Small Gravel Pit an Emperor, Migrant Hawker, Brown Hawker and Common Darter were seen. PS.

Redwing and Brambling – 14th October

Good day for passage today with 35 Redwing SW, 2 Brambling, 2 Redpoll, 1 Jay, 7 Siskin and 30 Golden Plover flying over.

Later in the day 56 Fieldfare went through, a Yellow-legged Gull settled on the Slurry Lagoon with around 1,000 Grey-lag Geese and about 2,000 Starlings came in to roost in the reed bed. RW.

Pintail – 30th September

On the Lower Path this morning was a Willow Tit, and a Jay later flew over the site. The Pintail was on the Slurry Lagoon and the Cetti’s Warbler could be heard singing from the Causeway. PS.

Caspian Gull – 27th September

During the ‘Patchwatch’ a Caspian Gull was tentatively identified on the Slurry Lagoon. Also present was a Dunlin, two Green Sandpipers, three Jays and the Pintail. There were still several species of warbler in evidence and a light passage of Skylarks and Meadow Pipits was noted. The Peregrine was seen again and two skeins of Pink-footed Geese were seen flying west. Seventy-six species of bird were noted during the day. PS.

Black-tailed Godwit – 19th September

Went down the Lagoons today and had a single Black tailed Godwit, 3 Common Snipe, 2 Water Rail (including one nearly fully grown juv) 3 Common Buzzard, 1 Yellow legged Gull, 3 House Martin, 2 Sparrowhawk, 3 Reed Warbler, 1 Willow Warbler and a single Jay.DM.
