This morning three Ringed Plover were seen flying around the Slurry Lagoon, also a Stonechat was in the reed-bed. Later, eight Golden Plover flew over the site. Both Redwing and Fieldfare were seen passing through and a Bittern, two Pintail and a Dunlin were seen. JV.

Redwing – 3rd October
This morning there was a light passage of Skylarks and Swallows. Three Golden Plover and a Lapwing also flew over. A Raven was calling from a pylon and later a Redwing flew over and some were on the Hawthorns along the Lower Path. A Mistle Thrush flew over (an unusual bird for the site) and six Water Rail were heard calling from different reed-beds. Towards late morning a Cream-top Marsh Harrier was seen in the distance as it left the site. PS.

Bearded Reedling – 13th November
This morning, during the Monthly Bird Count, eight Bearded Reedlings were seen in the Slurry Lagoon reed-bed. Also seen were a Pintail, a Green Sandpiper and a Brambling . 29 golden Plovers also circled the Slurry Lagoon before flying off. MC.
Golden Plover – 16th December
This morning there were, as usual, good numbers of Greylag and Canada Geese and Mallards on the Slurry Lagoon, which went off to feed fairly early on. The hedgerows were full of thrushes, mostly Redwings, Blackbirds and Fieldfares. A flock of about three hundred Lapwings flew over with a flock of about fifty Golden Plovers, probably the ones from Holme Pierrepont. There were two Snipe on the Slurry Lagoon, an Egyptian Goose flew over and six Goldeneye were on the Large Gravel Pit. PS.
Goosander – 9th December
This morning, during the Bird Count, two female Goosanders landed on the Deep Pit. Also recorded were a Chiffchaff, Treecreeper and a lone Golden Plover. There were plenty of winter thrushes about too, with high numbers especially of Redwings and Blackbirds. A short stretch of the Ouse Dyke held seven Little Egrets and a Kingfisher. PS.
Golden Plover – 13th October
This morning the drake Mandarin was back with the Greylag Geese on the field across the river. Seven Golden Plover flew northwards across the site. PS.
Firecrest – 13th March
This morning, during the Bird Count, a Firecrest was found on Willow Walk, by the steps. It was followed all the way along Willow Walk and about fifty yards down the Lower Path, where it stayed for a while. A Peregrine was also seen by the power lines and a Golden Plover over the Severn/Trent fields. PS.
Bearded Tit – 18th October
This morning some Bearded Tits were heard calling in the Slurry Lagoon reed bed. Eight Golden Plover nearly joined the Lapwings on the Slurry Lagoon before flying off to the SE, a Brambling was seen on the Causeway and two Golden-eye flew around the site before landing on the Large Gravel Pit. Three flocks of Fieldfares flew through and there was a small arrival of Goldcrests. Four Chiffchaff were along the Ouse Dyke and also seen were several Redpoll, Siskins, a Mistle Thrush and a Jay. Golden Plover – 8th October
This evening, at about 7.30, a Barn Owl was seen, hunting along the Causeway. Later a Tawny Owl was also seen and 21 golden Plover came in to the Slurry Lagoon. Noctule and Pipistrelle were also flying overhead and detected on a bat box. RW.
Iceland Gull – 27th December
At about mid-day a first winter Iceland Gull joined the gull roost on the Slurry Lagoon. It spent some time bathing and then rested on the shore. About forty Golden Plovers flew over at about the same time and a Peregrine had flushed the roost shortly before. There were two Cetti’s Warblers, one calling one singing, and several Water Rail calling from around all the water bodies. Three Little Egrets were seen on the large willow beside the Large Gravel Pit. PS.
