This morning a Raven flew across the site, pausing on a pylon on its way. A Kingfisher was seen on the riverbank and there were two Grey Wagtails and four Little Egrets on the Ouse Dyke. Overhead there was a light passage of Swallows and House Martins, with some Meadow Pipits and Siskins. In the bushes there were still plenty of Chiffchaffs and a few Blackcaps, and a Jay was seen. Raven – 22nd September
Bearded Tit – 12th November
This morning, during the Bird Count, Bearded Tits were heard calling in the Slurry Lagoon reed bed. There were also nine Goldeneyes on the Large Gravel Pit, a Peregrine chasing the ducks on the Slurry Lagoon, Redwings, Redpolls, Siskins and twenty-five Fieldfares. PS.
Redwing – 23rd October
This morning there were quite a few Redwings at the lagoons, with more arriving as the morning went on. There was a flock of thirteen Redpolls and about three Siskins passed over as well as several small groups of Skylarks. PS.
Barn Owl – 8th October
This morning, during the bird count, a Barn Owl was seen. Also two Ravens were on the pylons, Siskin and Redpoll were about as well as one Tree Sparrow along the Lower Path. Eight Snipe were seen dropping into the Slurry Lagoon reed bed. By the Small Gravel Pit a late Garden warbler was sunning itself. PS.
Ruff – 9th October
During the Bird Count this morning two Ruff flew around the Slurry Lagoon but did not stop. Also seen were Siskin, Redpoll and there were eight Snipe on the Slurry Lagoon. The Wigeon count is now in excess of 500. PS.
Barn Owl – 18th January
This afternoon a Barn Owl was seen hunting around the Gravel Pits and two Buzzards were perched untidily in a birch tree across the Wader Scrape. The Black Swan was still with the Mute Swans across the river and a Goosander flew over the site. Four Siskins were seen along the entrance path and 23 Linnets were near the railway bridge. PS.
Bittern – 10th January
This morning, during the bird count, a Bittern was seen flying into the Deep Pit. Eight Egyptian Geese were seen flying over the Slurry Lagoon and small flocks of Siskins and Redpolls were seen. Up to four Cetti’s Warblers were heard singing and a Treecreeper was seen on the Lower Path. PS.
Stonechat – 29th December
This morning the male and female Stonechats were seen on the Wader Scrape. A Brambling and a Siskin were heard along the path on the north side of the Slurry Lagoon, and two Frogs were seen in the Deep Pit and a Red Admiral was seen on the Causeway. SC. PS.
Bearded Tit – 18th October
This morning some Bearded Tits were heard calling in the Slurry Lagoon reed bed. Eight Golden Plover nearly joined the Lapwings on the Slurry Lagoon before flying off to the SE, a Brambling was seen on the Causeway and two Golden-eye flew around the site before landing on the Large Gravel Pit. Three flocks of Fieldfares flew through and there was a small arrival of Goldcrests. Four Chiffchaff were along the Ouse Dyke and also seen were several Redpoll, Siskins, a Mistle Thrush and a Jay. Black-tailed Godwit – 20th September
This morning there was a female Wheatear on the fence beside the Deep Pit and a Black-tailed Godwit was on the Slurry Lagoon, until two hot-air balloons flushed everything off. There was a light passage of Swallows, some Meadow Pipits and Siskins with one or two Skylarks. PS.
In the afternoon a Greenshank stopped briefly and a Hobby was seen hawking dragonflies. RW.
