Swift – 21st April

In the morning 15 Bar-tailed Godwits flew NE along the Trent. In the afternoon a Marsh Harrier flew over, a Swift flew over the Causeway(RW). In total 66 Little Gulls few into the Deep Pit (58 in one flock), 20 Bar-tailed Godwits, a Whimbrel, Little Ringed Plover and Green Sandpiper were also seen. MC.

In the evening a Grasshopper Warbler was heard for the second night running in the sub-station field. RJP.

Whimbrel – 18th August

This morning the Peregrine was on the new pylon. One Black-tailed Godwit was on the Slurry Lagoon with about forty Lapwings and a Water Rail skipped across in front of the bench. A flock of fourteen Whimbrel flew over the site to the south-west and a cream-top Marsh Harrier flushed all of the gulls as it quartered the Slurry Lagoon reed-bed before dropping into the reeds, where it stayed. A Green Sandpiper and a Redshank were on the Ecopark, the Redshank later visiting the Slurry Lagoon. Sedge and Willow Warblers were seen and heard along with Whitethroat, young Blackcaps and plenty of Chiffchaffs.  IEP.

Little Gull – 23rd April

This morning there was a passage of Little Gulls through the reserve. At about 08.00 ten flew through to the north. Later a single flew through and then decided to stop on the Large Gravel Pit where, at about 11.40, eleven more flew in and joined it. They were hawking St. Marks Flies over the water and were later joined by one Arctic Tern. There were also two Whimbrel seen early on, flying through to the NE. Two Ravens were around the Slurry Lagoon and a Cuckoo was also seen there. Three Lesser Whitethroats and a Garden Warbler were singing along with most of the other warbler species. PS.

Wood Sandpiper – 28th April

This morning the Wood Sandpiper was still present on the pools on the ‘Ecopark’. It was briefly joined by a Whimbrel, two Little Ringed Plovers and a male Yellow Wagtail. Today was Patchwatch Day and a total of 74 species of bird were seen, including ten warbler species with Grasshopper Warbler, Swift, House Martin and Cuckoo. PS.

In the evening a Little Gull briefly dropped into the Deep Pit. JDn.

Avocet – 30th April

Early on this morning an Avocet and a Whimbrel were on the Slurry Lagoon. The Whimbrel flew off to the NE and a little later the Avocet flew to the SE, possibly to Holme Pierrepont. There were three Common Terns over the Deep Pit and these were briefly joined by four more.   PS.

In the late afternoon a pair of Garganey were on the Slurry Lagoon.   JMD.

Whimbrel – 28th July

This morning a Whimbrel was heard calling as it flew over the site, towards Holme Pierrepont. There was a Common Sandpiper feeding along the edge of one of the tern platforms, much to the annoyance of the residents. The Dragonfly Walk was a mixed success as the weather was not very co-operative. Red-eyed and Small Red-eyed Damselflies were found on the Small Gravel Pit as well as a Ruddy Darter. PS.
