Egyptian Goose – 30th December

This morning two Peregrines were on the pylons. Two Egyptian Geese and a Pink-footed Goose were amongst the Greylags and Canadas. Seven singing Cetti’s Warblers and five Water Rail were heard. PS

Barn Owl – 26th December

This morning at dawn a Barn Owl was seen hunting near the Gravel Pits and a Peregrine was on the new pylon. Up to eight Water Rail were heard (with one seen) and three Cetti’s Warblers were singing. One Snipe was seen in the Slurry Lagoon reed bed. PS.

Woodlark – 7th October

This morning, during the Patchwatch, a light passage of migrant birds was observed. Species seen included Skylark (with one Woodlark amongst them), Redwing, Fieldfare, Meadow Pipit, Swallow, Stonechat, Brambling and Siskin. On the Slurry Lagoon Wigeon, Pintail, Water Rail, Jack Snipe, Snipe and eight Bearded Tits were seen, a Nuthatch was seen in the corner of the Deep Pit and two Peregrines were on the pylon. Towards dusk a Barn Owl was seen. In total over seventy species were seen. PS.

Bittern – 5th October

This afternoon the Slurry Lagoon held a Bittern, seven Bearded Tits, five Water Rail, one Jack Snipe, nine Common Snipe, fourteen Lapwings and around 250 Starlings. RW.

Greenshank – 3rd September

Today there was a Greenshank and a Green Sandpiper on the Slurry Lagoon, along with four Water Rail and six Common Snipe. A Hobby and two Peregrines were seen as well as nine Wigeon and three Yellow Wagtails. RW.

Green Sandpiper – 25th August

This morning a Green Sandpiper was on the Slurry Lagoon. Three Water Rails were calling and a pair of Buzzards were seen with one juvenile. PS.

In the evening the Green Sandpiper was joined by a Black-tailed Godwit and four Snipe. JMD.

Red-crested Pochard – 6th August

In the late afternoon there were two Black-tailed Godwits and three Green Sandpipers on the Slurry Lagoon. Also seen was a Bittern in the Slurry Lagoon reeds at dusk, three Water Rail, one Red-crested Pochard, a Willow Tit, a Hobby, 40 Swallows and 300 Starlings which came in to roost. RW.

Great White Egret – 20th July

This morning a Yellow Wagtail and a Kingfisher were seen. PS.

In the evening a Great White Egret flew over. A Green Sandpiper was on the Slurry Lagoon. Two juvenile Water Rails were seen and 600 Starlings and 50 Sand Martins came in to roost. RW.

White Stork – 19th April

This morning two Mediterranean Gulls flew over the Deep Pit to the north. A little later an identifiably second pair flew into the Deep Pit and then carried on their way north. At just after mid-day a White Stork was seen flying high to the west (RW). Also present was a Grasshopper Warbler and a Garden Warbler. In the Slurry Lagoon reed bed a Water Rail was heard calling. Red-breasted Merganser – 9th April

This morning, amongst the Shovelers, Teal, Tufted Duck and Gadwall on the Slurry Lagoon were a superb pair of Red-breasted Mergansers. More Sedge Warblers had come in overnight and were singing in the reed beds and a Water Rail was also calling. PS.

Along the Ouse Dyke a Nuthatch was found RW and earlier a Barn Owl was seen LD/PD.

In the afternoon, on the Bird Walk, the Mergansers were still present and a Barn Owl was seen along the Lower Path. Also seen was a Roe Deer that jumped the Slurry Lagoon fence and crossed the path in front of us. PS.

In the late afternoon a Firecrest was found, singing, along the Ouse Dyke. RW.
