Green Sandpiper – 10th November

This morning, during the Bird Count, eleven Water Rail were heard calling around the reserve. Two Peregrines were on the new pylon and a Treecreeper was seen along the Boundary Hedge. On the Eco-park there were four Little Egrets and two Green Sandpipers. PS.

Sandwich Tern – 22nd April

This morning a Sandwich Tern flew down-river, past the Deep Pit, where three Common Terns were displaying. A Kingfisher was on the river and a Treecreeper was seen hopping about on the path, picking up food items. The Grasshopper Warbler was reeling on the Deep Pit bank, overlooking the river and a Bittern was seen, flying between reed beds on the Slurry Lagoon. PS.

Treecreeper – 3rd March

This morning a Raven spent some time on the site and one of the pylons, whilst a Peregrine was on the new pylon. A Chiffchaff was singing along the Lower Path and a Treecreeper was in the willows at the river end of the Boundary Hedge. Some Oystercatchers were heard but not seen on the flooded field across the river. PS.

Goosander – 9th December

This morning, during the Bird Count, two female Goosanders landed on the Deep Pit. Also recorded were a Chiffchaff, Treecreeper and a lone Golden Plover. There were plenty of winter thrushes about too, with high numbers especially of Redwings and Blackbirds. A short stretch of the Ouse Dyke held seven Little Egrets and a Kingfisher. PS.

Treecreeper – 16th January

At mid-day today a Treecreeper and a Chiffchaff were seen along the Ouse Dyke. JMD.

Bittern – 10th January

This morning, during the bird count, a Bittern was seen flying into the Deep Pit. Eight Egyptian Geese were seen flying over the Slurry Lagoon and small flocks of Siskins and Redpolls were seen. Up to four Cetti’s Warblers were heard singing and a Treecreeper was seen on the Lower Path. PS.

Brambling – 7th December

Amongst a large finch flock beside the Ouse Dyke path this afternoon a Brambling was spotted. A Treecreeper was also seen in trees on the Ouse Dyke bank. SC.

Jack Snipe – 23rd November

This morning, amongst the finches along the Slurry Lagoon north path, there were at least two Bramblings. Along the Lower Path, on willow herb growing in the Typhus Pool, there was a flock of about forty Lesser Redpoll. At the water’s edge in front of the bench on the Causeway, a Jack Snipe was flushed and the Black Swan is still in residence on the Large Gravel Pit. Also a Treecreeper was seen on the old hawthorns along Willow Walk. PS.

In the evening a Barn Owl was seen over the grassland next to the Large Gravel pit. JMD.

Goosander – 18th January

This morning there were three Chiffchaffs along the Ouse Dyke, the Green Sandpiper was also seen and a Treecreeper, two Little Egrets and three Water Rails. On the Large Gravel Pit there were three Goosander amongst the Wigeon. On the weedy patch in front of the substation there were a male and female Stonechat. PS.

Chiffchaff – 4th January

This morning in the frost several small birds were feeding along the Ouse Dyke. Two Water Rail were feeding along the stream and hiding on the far bank. Both were right out in the open when first seen. A Treecreeper was flitting along the trees on the far bank, mousing its way up an elderberry trunk. Two Chiffchaffs were feeding in the low vegetation, moving together along the bank of the stream, and a third was seen further along. The Little Egret was also present and seemingly bolder than usual. PS.
