Early this afternoon a Willow Tit was seen along the Lower Path. On the Slurry Lagoon there was a Dunlin and a Snipe, 83 Teal and 54 Shoveler. A Hobby was seen and 25 Wigeon were on the Large Gravel Pit. RW.

Whinchat – 31st August
This morning there was a Spotted Flycatcher in the willows at the river end of the Boundary Hedge. A Greenshank flew over the Slurry Lagoon but did not stay. In the afternoon three Whinchats spent some time feeding along the Ouse Dyke bank at the back of the Wader Scrape and the Lancaster Bomber visiting the Gedling Show flushed two Snipe from the Slurry Lagoon as it flew over the site. Smew – 14th January
This afternoon a male Smew was seen fishing on the Large Gravel Pit. The male Pintail was still present and about ten Goldeneye. From the Causeway a Woodcock was seen flying along the inner bank of the Deep Pit and several Snipe were heard as they left the site to feed. RW PS.
Tawny Owl – 27th November
This evening there were at least four Cetti’s Warblers singing on the site and several Water Rail were calling from the reed beds. Two Tawny Owls flew over the reed bed in the Deep Pit and some Snipe were heard as they flew against the dark sky. PS.
Black Swan – 27th September
This afternoon a Black Swan settled on the Slurry Lagoon. There were also five Ringed Plover, three Dunlin, a Greenshank and thirteen Common Snipe. RW.
Bittern – 25th September
A Bittern flew across the Slurry Lagoon early in the afternoon. Also present were two Pintail, twelve Snipe and two Cetti’s Warblers. RW.
Garganey – 21st August
Early this afternoon there were two Garganey, six Snipe, four Ruff and three Green Sandpipers on the Slurry Lagoon. RW.
Marsh Harrier – 29th March
After seeing yesterday’s male Marsh Harrier, it was a surprise this morning to see a female, also over the Slurry Lagoon reed bed. It dropped into the reeds and disappeared for a while and when it reappeared its crop was distended with its recent meal. Crows escorted it off the site unfortunately. Also seen were the Little Ringed Plover on the Wader Scrape, with a Redshank, six Buzzards, seven Snipe and two singing Chiffchaffs. PS.
This afternoon a White Wagtail was present amongst the Pied Wagtails on the Wader Scrape. RW.
Little Ringed Plover – 20th March
The Little Ringed Plover is still on the Wader Scrape, along with a Lapwing, 24 Gadwall and a male Goldeneye. Two Cetti’s Warblers were heard, one in the Haven, the other in the Deep Pit, as well as several Water Rail and there were two Snipe near the Large Gravel Pit. In an ash tree on the railway embankment there was a pre-roost flock of 57 Linnets. PS.
Barn Owl – 4th March
The Barn Owl was seen again this evening hunting beside the Large Gravel Pit. Also seen were two Little Egrets, eight Snipe and a Buzzard. RW.
