This morning, during the Monthly Bird Count, a flock of 26 Goosander flew over the Large Gravel Pit. In the Severn/Trent plantation a flock of Siskin, Redpoll and Goldfinch were feeding in the Alders. PS.

Bittern – 14th January
This morning a Peregrine was seen on the new pylon. A Bittern was seen flying over the Slurry Lagoon and the 21 Lesser Redpolls were again feeding in birches at the dry end of the Slurry Lagoon. The Ouse Dyke had up to four Chiffchaffs along it from Teal Close to the footbridge. PS.
Chiffchaff – 14th January
This morning, during the bird count, a Chiffchaff was found on the river by the railway bridge and another along the Ouse Dyke. Four Egyptian Geese were also seen, flying over the site, as well as two Lesser Redpoll and there were thirteen Goldeneye on the Large Gravel Pit. PS.
Smew – 14th January
This afternoon a male Smew was seen fishing on the Large Gravel Pit. The male Pintail was still present and about ten Goldeneye. From the Causeway a Woodcock was seen flying along the inner bank of the Deep Pit and several Snipe were heard as they left the site to feed. RW PS.
Barn Owl – 14th January
The Barn Owl was back over the grassland around the two gravel pits again this evening. It did not stay for as long this time though. There were approaching 200 Gadwall on the Large Fishing Pit and a Yellowhammer mobbed a Weasel in the grass in front of us as we watched the owl. The Willow Tit was heard again along the Lower Path. Bittern and Little Egrets – 14th January
A Bittern was seen again in the Deep Pit (RW). It was seen a couple of times, walking on the ice and flying between reed beds. Perhaps they will stay for the winter.
Two Little Egrets were seen in the Ouse Dyke (RD).
