Chiffchaff – 14th January

This morning, during the bird count, a Chiffchaff was found on the river by the railway bridge and another along the Ouse Dyke. Four Egyptian Geese were also seen, flying over the site, as well as two Lesser Redpoll and there were thirteen Goldeneye on the Large Gravel Pit. PS.

Egyptian Goose – 3rd December

This morning two Egyptian Geese flew north over the site. A Barn Owl was seen flying from the box and a Lesser Redpoll was seen on the Lower Path. On the Large Gravel Pit there were fourteen Goldeneye and about 160 Pink-footed Geese flew west over the site. PS.

In the afternoon a male Bearded Tit was seen in the Slurry Lagoon reed bed, a Peregrine was on one of the pylons and another 64 Pink-footed geese flew over. RW.

Egyptian Goose – 19th April

This morning at least 11 Willow Warblers were singing and many more Blackcaps were in. Three Water Rails were heard and an Egyptian goose flew over the Slurry Lagoon. PS.

In the Afternoon a male Redstart was found on the Causeway bank, two Yellow Wagtails and nine Wheatears were in the field beyond the Wader Scrape and four Common Terns were on the tern platforms. JMD.

Bittern – 10th January

This morning, during the bird count, a Bittern was seen flying into the Deep Pit. Eight Egyptian Geese were seen flying over the Slurry Lagoon and small flocks of Siskins and Redpolls were seen. Up to four Cetti’s Warblers were heard singing and a Treecreeper was seen on the Lower Path. PS.

Egyptian Goose – 27th January

Two Egyptian Geese were on the flooded fields, upstream of the railway bridge, this afternoon. The flock of Chaffinches along the Ouse Dyke path contained at least one Brambling. PS.

Egyptian Goose – 26th December

There were lots of thrushes and finches feeding on the site this morning. Three Little Egrets were on the Ouse Dyke and Wader Scrape and four Egyptian Geese flew over the Slurry Lagoon. PS.

Brambling – 18th October

A large finch and bunting flock has formed at the dry end of the Slurry Lagoon, mostly consisting of Reed Buntings and Goldfinches but also containing a few Green Finches and Chaffinches, with one male Brambling. Also present were a few Meadow Pipits. On the Slurry Lagoon a Redshank was present early on and later five Egyptian Geese flew in and at least one Pintail is still present. Two Peregrines, probably both males, flew over calling loudly, one making occasional stoops at the other, talons outstretched. Also seen were two Redpoll and two small flocks of Redwings. PS.

Egyptian Goose – 25th October

A single Egyptian Goose flew onto the Slurry Lagoon late afternoon with the Canadas and Greylags. A Little Egret was spotted but no further sightings of the Great White. The Starling roost was again impressive with wave after wave of birds decending into the Slurry reed bed – hard to assess numbers but perhaps between 7 and 8,000 birds in total. JMD RW.

Egyptian Goose – 10th January

This afternoon there were two Water Rail showing well around the edge of the Large Gravel Pit and a Cetti’s warbler was scolding near the Willow Pond. Three Egyptian Geese flew over towards Attenborough. RW.

In the late afternoon a Merlin flew the length of the Deep Pit before diving towards the bushes at its southern end. Six Little Egrets were seen leaving the Large Gravel Pit, probably to go to roost and a Cetti’s Warbler was heard in the Deep pit. PS.

The Siberian Chiffchaff was again reported along the Ouse Dyke.
