Raven – 22nd September

This morning a Raven flew across the site, pausing on a pylon on its way. A Kingfisher was seen on the riverbank and there were two Grey Wagtails and four Little Egrets on the Ouse Dyke.  Overhead there was a light passage of Swallows and House Martins, with some Meadow Pipits and Siskins. In the bushes there were still plenty of Chiffchaffs and a few Blackcaps, and a Jay was seen.   PS.

Willow Warbler – 7th April

This morning, three Oystercatchers were flying over the Slurry Lagoon, piping as they went, four Swallows and two Sand Martins were also seen. Over the Deep Pit three House Martins were seen flying east and a Willow Warbler was singing on the railway side of the Slurry Lagoon. Also heard were six Chiffchaffs, two Blackcaps and three Cetti’s Warblers.   PS.

In the evening a Common Tern came in to circle the tern platforms before flying off.  JMD

Red-crested Pochard – 11th September

This morning, during the bird count, two Red-crested Pochard were seen on the Slurry Lagoon. Large mixed flocks of warblers were foraging around the site, mainly Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps but Whitethroats, a Willow Warbler and a Garden Warbler were also seen. Several family groups of Swallows were also going through during the morning.  PS.

Egyptian Goose – 19th April

This morning at least 11 Willow Warblers were singing and many more Blackcaps were in. Three Water Rails were heard and an Egyptian goose flew over the Slurry Lagoon.  PS.

In the Afternoon a male Redstart was found on the Causeway bank, two Yellow Wagtails and nine Wheatears were in the field beyond the Wader Scrape and four Common Terns were on the tern platforms. JMD.

Redstart – 9th April

This morning a male Redstart was seen in the Plantation, near the Causeway end. A Sedge Warbler was singing down the bank and at least five Willow Warblers were singing around the site. Up to fifteen Chiffchaffs were singing and two Blackcaps, and a Swallow was with the Sand Martins by the railway bridge. At least two Wheatears were still on the ploughed field beyond the Wader Scrape and there was still one Goldeneye on the Large Gravel Pit. A Small Tortoiseshell and a Brimstone were seen in flight.  PS.

There was also a report of a distant view of a Red Kite, towards Carlton.

Raven – 4th April

This morning two Ravens were seen on one of the pylons. Two Blackcaps, a male and a female, were along the Ouse Dyke. A Swallow and a Peregrine were also seen.  JMD.

In the afternoon three Little Gulls flew through.  Later on a Barn Owl was seen hunting, a Snipe was seen and about 300 Sand Martins came in to roost in the reed bed.  RW.

Greenshank – 13th September

This morning, during the bird count, two Whinchats were found on the area between the substation and the reserve.  Three Greenshank flew over and 44 Wigeon were on the Large Gravel Pit.  A Peregrine attacked the pigeons on the Slurry Lagoon and a Hobby was catching insects over the Deep Pit. There were still some warblers about, with Garden, Sedge, Reed and Willow being seen as well as Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Whitethroat.  PS.
