Tawny Owl – 27th November

This evening there were at least four Cetti’s Warblers singing on the site and several Water Rail were calling from the reed beds. Two Tawny Owls flew over the reed bed in the Deep Pit and some Snipe were heard as they flew against the dark sky. PS.

Siberian Chiffchaff – 29th December

A Siberian Chiffchaff has been seen along the Ouse Dyke for the last few days, between the footbridge and the road. The Iceland Gull was seen again on the Slurry Lagoon and a Tawny Owl was heard calling by the river. RW.

White-fronted Goose – 21st November

As the light faded this evening the Grey-lag and Canada Geese started to arrive to roost on the Large Gravel Pit and Slurry Lagoon. When it was almost dark the White-fronted Geese were heard and about twenty-four birds were picked out against the dim sky as they came in to roost on the large Gravel Pit. As I walked off a female Tawny Owl was heard and, a little later, some Golden Plover were heard as they flew in. PS.

Peregrine Falcon – 19th April

This morning a Peregrine Falcon flew over and perched on the nearby electricity pylon for a few minutes before moving to the next pylon to the north-east. A Common Sandpiper flew round the Slurry Lagoon and a Little Ringed Plover was displaying over the Slurry.

In the early afternoon one Common Tern appeared on the newly recommissioned Tern Platforms. One Swift and two House Martins were seen and a Redstart was heard alarm calling. A Tawny Owl was observed in the willow tree. RW.

Later two Avocets settled on the Slurry Lagoon and a male Marsh Harrier flew through. PS. RW.

Tawny Owl – 9th March

The Tawny Owl was seen this afternoon , sitting in the entrance to its nest box with a very snooty expresion on its face. The Cetti’s Warbler was heard calling again from the Slurry Lagoon. PS.

Iceland Gull – 30th January

In the Deep Water Pit in the late afternoon a first winter Iceland Gull was spotted. Also noted were seven Water Rail, three Snipe and one or two Cetti’s Warblers in the reeds on the Slurry Lagoon. At dusk a Tawny Owl flew across the reeds in the Deep Water Pit and landed in the willows on the south-east corner. Three Common Buzzards were also seen. RW

Tawny Owl – 8th December

About 70 Wigeon flew NE over the reserve this evening. As dusk approached Redwings came into the Deep Pit scrub to roost. Up to seven Water Rail were calling and three Cetti’s Warblers. As it got darker a Tawny Owl hooted. PS.

Tawny Owl – 19th November

This morning the Tawny Owl on the bank of the Deep Pit was showing very clearly owing to the loss of leaves from the tree. Meanwhile two Cetti’s Warblers were singing on either side of the Causeway and four small Brown Rats were feeding on the table near the railway,while being serenaded by a Song Thrush. AE.

Little Egret – 15th November

A Little Egret was seen this morning in the large willow tree beside the Large Gravel Pit. It later flew to the dead ash trees beside the Slurry Lagoon but was chased back to its previous perch by a Carrion Crow. A Tawny Owl was found at its roost in the Deep Pit by several Blackbirds, there were also two Cetti’s Warblers singing nearby. In the reed bed on the Slurry Lagoon three Water Rail were heard calling and two Snipe were also seen here along with good numbers of Teal and Shoveler. A Peregrine was hunting over nearby fields, putting up clouds of pigeons, gulls, Lapwings and corvids. PS.
