This morning a Raven flew across the site, pausing on a pylon on its way. A Kingfisher was seen on the riverbank and there were two Grey Wagtails and four Little Egrets on the Ouse Dyke. Overhead there was a light passage of Swallows and House Martins, with some Meadow Pipits and Siskins. In the bushes there were still plenty of Chiffchaffs and a few Blackcaps, and a Jay was seen. Raven – 22nd September
Marsh Tit – 1st September
This morning a Spotted Flycatcher and a Willow Tit were on the south side of the Deep Pit. A Marsh Tit was on the north side of the Slurry Lagoon and nine Snipe were on the Slurry Lagoon. A Raven flew over to the north-west and two Yellow Wagtails flew over. RW.
Red Kite – 2nd July
This morning a Raven flew over the Slurry Lagoon, chased by some crows. A Bittern was in the Slurry Lagoon reed-bed. It flew from near the bench to the reeds along the northern edge of the water. Later a Red Kite appeared over the Deep Pit sending the breeding terns into a frenzy. The terns quickly climbed right up to it and began to mob it, turning it in the direction of Colwick Park.
There were also plenty of dragonflies with four Broad-bodied Chasers, three Black-tailed Skimmers, four Emperors, three Southern Hawkers, ten Brown Hawkers, two Four-spotted Chasers and a Ruddy Darter. PS.
Curlew – 25th March
This morning two Oysrercatchers were on the flooded field across the river. A Curlew flew over the site to the north and two Ravens were seen flying north along the river valley. A Snipe, two Cetti’s Warblers and nine Pochard were on the Slurry Lagoon. Nine male and two female Brimstones were seen as well as a Tortoiseshell, Comma and putative Peacock.
Great Egret – 10th March
This morning a Great Egret was on the Slurry Lagoon. It took off and circled high before drifting off to the NNE at about 09.00 hrs. A Raven was also seen, near the railway bridge, and three Water Rails and two Cetti’s Warblers were heard. PS.
Raven – 4th February
This morning 80 Pink-footed Geese flew west, over the site. A Peregrine was on the pylon, two Ravens flew downriver and a Stonechat was seen on the Wader Scrape. The fields near the sub-station held a large flock of small birds that contained mainly Chaffinches, Redwings, Goldfinches, Song Thrushes and Starlings. PS.
Raven – 26th November
This morning a Raven flew over the site, carrying a corn-on-the-cob, a Snipe flew over the Causeway and a Water Rail flew in front of the bench, one of up to eight heard. PS.
Barn Owl – 8th October
This morning, during the bird count, a Barn Owl was seen. Also two Ravens were on the pylons, Siskin and Redpoll were about as well as one Tree Sparrow along the Lower Path. Eight Snipe were seen dropping into the Slurry Lagoon reed bed. By the Small Gravel Pit a late Garden warbler was sunning itself. PS.
Black Tern – 24th September
This morning, during the Bird Walk, a Black Tern was watched for about twenty minutes, hawking insects over the Deep Pit. Also seen were a Raven and two Lesser Redpolls. There was a light passage of Swallows, House Martins and Meadow Pipits, with fifty-five Swallows, twenty House Martins and seven Meadow Pipits seen flying over to the south. There were also good numbers of Migrant Hawkers seen. PS.
Nuthatch – 17th September
This morning a Nuthatch flew along the river at tree-top height. A 1st for site. Also seen were two Ravens, on the pylons, a Hobby hawking insects over the Slurry Lagoon while a Snipe dropped into the reed-bed. There was still a light passage of swallows and martins. PS.
