Bearded Reedling – 15th October

This morning, as the sun rose, two cream-top Marsh Harriers were seen leaving their roost in the Slurry Lagoon reed-bed. There were at least 50 Wigeon on the Slurry Lagoon and later two Bearded Reedlings flew across in front of the bench. Two Redpoll flew over and, along the Pylon Path, first a Brambling, then about 80 Redwing flew over.

Hobby – 7th May

Early this morning, three Hobbies were seen over the Gravel Pits. Later on a passage of Swifts were passing over the site, 57 were counted. Several Green Hairstreaks were seen, mainly along the Pylon Path. JV./MT.

Waxwing – 14th December

This morning, amongst the Fieldfares and Redwings, four Waxwings were seen at the southern end of the Causeway, before moving to hawthorns below the Pylon Path. NH.

Arctic Tern – 21st April

This morning, an Arctic Tern was briefly over the Deep Pit (9am) before flying off south-east. A Garden Warbler was singing and showing well by the river near the railway bridge and a Grasshopper Warbler was reeling below the bench at the north-end of the Pylon Path, below the pylon. Reed Warblers were heard in the Slurry Lagoon reed bed and a Raven was over the Slurry Lagoon. Two Peregrines were on the new pylon, one brought prey in, which was not far of its own size. Little Ringed Plover on the Ecopark. IEP.

Merlin – 3rd December

This morning there were even more Redwings and Blackbirds on the site and these attracted a Merlin which swooped down the Pylon Bank, towards the Small Gravel Pit, as it tried to catch one. Sparrowhawks were also hunting and some Redwing breast feathers were found on the path. A Pink-footed Goose was with the Greylag flock across the river and a pair of Goosander flew over the Slurry Lagoon. PS.

Redstart – 8th October

A female Redstart was seen crossing the Pylon Path towards the Deep Pit. Several Skylarks and Swallows flew through and a Lesser Redpoll flew over. A Brimstone was seen near the Pump House. IEP. PS.

Red Kite – 27th May

This morning the hepatic female Cuckoo was seen on the Slurry Lagoon. A Hobby was joined by a Red Kite as they both hawked for damselflies above the Pylon Path. All ten warbler species were heard singing, ( Cetti’s, Willow, Reed, Sedge, Garden, Grasshopper, Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Blackcap and Chiffchaff.) some in good numbers. Later two Hobbies were hawking damselflies over the Slurry Lagoon and a Water Rail was heard chipping from the reed bed. The damselflies included Red-eyed, Common Blue and Blue-tailed plus a Four-spotted Chaser was seen. PS.
