This morning a Common Tern flew along the river before making a brief visit to the Deep Pit. Also in the Deep Pit, with a small flock of feeding Swallows, a House Martin paid a brief visit. PS.
Earlier on there was a report of a male Marsh Harrier, seen to land in the Slurry Lagoon reed bed before flying off in the direction of Holme Pierrepont.
This morning two Oystercatchers flew over the Slurry Lagoon, calling, and a Bittern was seen in the Deep Pit. One male Stonechat was still present in front of the sub-station. Two Cetti’s Warblers were heard as well as two Water Rails. PS.
This morning there were ten Lesser Redpoll on birch trees at the railway end of the Deep Pit. On the Large Gravel Pit twelve Goldeneye were counted. PS.
This morning eleven Whooper Swans flew over the Large Gravel Pit and Deep Pit. Also a Raven was heard calling and then seen flying over the site. SC.
This evening a Bittern was seen flying from the Slurry Lagoon into the Deep Pit. RW.
A Woodcock flew through the Deep Pit bushes, chased by two Magpies, well before dusk, and a Black Swan was on the Deep Pit before being chased off by resident Mutes and relocating on the Large Gravel Pit. JMD.
This morning, during the bird count, a Short-eared Owl was seen over the Deep Pit. It was mobbed by three crows which forced it to fly very high and then off to the south. There were plenty of winter thrushes and ducks about, with four Goldeneye on the Large Gravel Pit and three Little Egrets on the Ouse Dyke. Also several Water Rails and Cetti’s Warblers were heard. This afternoon there was a Yellow-legged Gull bathing in the Deep Pit. RW.
The Starling Roost numbered about 2,000 birds and two Little Egrets were on the Ouse Dyke. PS.
A female Common Scoter was on the Deep Pit this morning. Possibly the same bird that was present on Sunday. PS.
Early this afternoon there were two Whinchats at the back of the Wader Scrape. In the field beyond were three Yellow Wagtails and a Wheatear. RW.
Later on the Whinchats and Wheatear were still present. Along the Deep Pit bank under the pylons two Garden Warblers were singing and by the railway bridge ten Swifts were hawking insects. At the dry end of the Slurry Lagoon there was a female Redstart. PS.
