Goosander – 9th December

This morning, during the Bird Count, two female Goosanders landed on the Deep Pit. Also recorded were a Chiffchaff, Treecreeper and a lone Golden Plover. There were plenty of winter thrushes about too, with high numbers especially of Redwings and Blackbirds. A short stretch of the Ouse Dyke held seven Little Egrets and a Kingfisher. PS.

Raven – 22nd September

This morning a Raven flew across the site, pausing on a pylon on its way. A Kingfisher was seen on the riverbank and there were two Grey Wagtails and four Little Egrets on the Ouse Dyke. Overhead there was a light passage of Swallows and House Martins, with some Meadow Pipits and Siskins. In the bushes there were still plenty of Chiffchaffs and a few Blackcaps, and a Jay was seen. Jay – 4th September

This morning a Jay was screeching from the dry end of the Slurry Lagoon, a Snipe was on the Slurry Lagoon, near the bench and two Little Egrets were along the water’s edge. A Cetti’s Warbler was singing in the Deep Pit. PS.

Common Sandpiper – 7th August

This afternoon a Common Sandpiper, a Green Sandpiper and a Little Egret were all on the Slurry Lagoon. JMD.

Pintail – 27th June

This morning the female Pintail was still on the Slurry Lagoon as were the Shoveler pair and a Little Egret. There were also broods of Mallard and Gadwall. The first fledged Black-headed Gulls had also flown across from the Deep Pit. PS.

Stonechat – 29th January

This morning the Ouse Dyke produced Green Sandpiper, Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail, Chiffchaff and two Little Egrets. On the rough grassland in front of the substation there was a pair of Stonechats and on the Wader Scrape there were two Snipe. PS.

Little Egret – 11th December

This morning, during the monthly bird count, a flock of twelve Little Egrets flew over the reserve. There were also four Water Rail and five Cetti’s Warblers heard. PS.

Stonechat – 27th November

This morning a pair of Stonechats was seen on the Wader Scrape. Five Little Egrets were along the Ouse Dyke and a Snipe was seen over the Slurry Lagoon reedbed. PS.

Short-eared Owl – 13th November

This morning, during the bird count, a Short-eared Owl was seen over the Deep Pit. It was mobbed by three crows which forced it to fly very high and then off to the south. There were plenty of winter thrushes and ducks about, with four Goldeneye on the Large Gravel Pit and three Little Egrets on the Ouse Dyke. Also several Water Rails and Cetti’s Warblers were heard. Yellow-legged Gull – 24th October

This afternoon there was a Yellow-legged Gull bathing in the Deep Pit. RW.

The Starling Roost numbered about 2,000 birds and two Little Egrets were on the Ouse Dyke. PS.
