Arctic Tern – 28th April

In the afternoon thirteen Arctic Terns went through and there were also four or more Common Terns on the site. Also present were one Grasshopper Warbler, one Swift, sixty plus Swallows and six or more House Martins and a Red Kite. A Great White Egret flew over in the evening. RW.

Wood Sandpiper – 28th April

This morning the Wood Sandpiper was still present on the pools on the ‘Ecopark’. It was briefly joined by a Whimbrel, two Little Ringed Plovers and a male Yellow Wagtail. Today was Patchwatch Day and a total of 74 species of bird were seen, including ten warbler species with Grasshopper Warbler, Swift, House Martin and Cuckoo. PS.

In the evening a Little Gull briefly dropped into the Deep Pit. JDn.

Pied Flycatcher – 26th April

This morning there were ten species of warbler, singing on the reserve. Two Grasshopper Warblers were reeling near the northern pylon. A Wood Sandpiper was on the flashes beside the Ouse Dyke and a Pied Flycatcher was reported near the Wader Scrape bench. PS.

Sandwich Tern – 22nd April

This morning a Sandwich Tern flew down-river, past the Deep Pit, where three Common Terns were displaying. A Kingfisher was on the river and a Treecreeper was seen hopping about on the path, picking up food items. The Grasshopper Warbler was reeling on the Deep Pit bank, overlooking the river and a Bittern was seen, flying between reed beds on the Slurry Lagoon. PS.

Cuckoo – 21st April

This morning a Grasshopper Warbler and three Garden Warblers were singing. During the guided Walk a Cuckoo sang from the large willow by the Large Gravel Pit and two Common Terns were seen over the Deep Pit. Four Green Hairstreaks were seen, two were females laying eggs. PS

Cuckoo – 21st April

This morning a Cuckoo was calling from the ash trees along the railway line, before flying out across the Slurry Lagoon and then to the river. Eight Common Terns were making a lot of noise over the Deep Pit. A Grasshopper Warbler was singing from the middle of the Slurry Lagoon reed bed and a Garden Warbler was singing near the railway bridge. PS.

White Stork – 19th April

This morning two Mediterranean Gulls flew over the Deep Pit to the north. A little later an identifiably second pair flew into the Deep Pit and then carried on their way north. At just after mid-day a White Stork was seen flying high to the west (RW). Also present was a Grasshopper Warbler and a Garden Warbler. In the Slurry Lagoon reed bed a Water Rail was heard calling. Bittern – 18th April

This morning a Bittern was seen flying from the Slurry Lagoon reed bed towards the south. Also there were two Grasshopper Warblers and several Whitethroats. Butterflies were about as well with Orange-tip, Green-veined White, Comma and good numbers of Peacocks, Tortoiseshells and Brimstones. PS.

Grasshopper Warbler – 17th April

This morning a Peregrine, two Common Terns and two Redpolls were seen over the Slurry Lagoon. A Grasshopper Warbler and two Whitethroats were by the Gravel Pits and four Lesser Whitethroats were heard around the site. PS.

Birds seen this morning included Whimbrel, Cuckoo, Yellow Wagtail, Little Ringed Plover, Grasshopper Warbler and Wheatear. PS.
