Curlew – 17th September

This afternoon two Curlews were heard calling on the Slurry Lagoon and eventualy flew off to the south. There were also two Green Sandpipers and later a single Golden Plover flew in, calling loudly. There were still some Swallows by the railway bridge and two Yellow Wagtails flew over the site. Along the access track there were two Commas and along the Boundary Hedge two more Commas and a Red Admiral. PS.

Red Kite – 20th March

This morning there were two male Wheatears at the top end of the Slurry Lagoon, a Sand Martin and a Chiffchaff. Two Oystercatchers flew over and there were 73 Golden Plover on the Severn Trent field. At about 12.50 a Red Kite flew over the site, heading south. Later in the day 13 Sand Martins and 6 Snipe were seen. RW.

Cetti’s Warbler – 23rd January

At last a Cetti’s Warbler has been heard again at the lagoons. It was heard in the reed bed on the east side of the Slurry Lagoon. Eight Golden Plover were also seen, flying over. RW.

Winter Solstice – 21st December

It was beautiful at the Lagoons today. The Slurry is completely frozen and the Large Gravel Pit it partially frozen so the birds are more concentrated. The cold weather has pushed in large numbers of winter thrushes particularly Redwing and Fieldfare attracted by the abundance of hawthorn berries and in S.T. fields a flock of approximately 130 Golden Plover was resting. Peregrine, Stoat – 6th November

This morning a Peregrine flew over carrying a pigeon, while on the river bank a good view of a Stoat was obtained which was being shadowed by a small flock of Song Thrushes and several Magpies. Later a Kestrel and a Sparrowhawk were seen, and also 10 Golden Plover were on the slurry. AE

Goldeneye – 28th October

This morning there were two Cetti’s Warblers in song on the Slurry Lagoon. There were also two Goldeneye on the Large Gravel Pit and 25 Golden Plover were present. RW.

Stonechat – 23rd October

This morning a male and female Stonechat were on the outside of the Deep Pit bank, at its north eastern corner. Inside the Deep Pit bank two Cetti’s Warblers were showing well together. On the Slurry Lagoon was a Dunlin and a Snipe and several Water Rail were calling. Two Redwing, six Siskin and a Redpoll flew over and about sixty Golden Plovers came in to rest on the Slurry Lagoon. The Willow Tit was showing well on the Lower Path. PS.

At the other end of the day the Starling roost is building up to quite a spectacle with thousands of birds flying in to roost in the Slurry reed beds. This evening so much activity attracted a Sparrowhawk who after one or two unsuccessful passes over the reeds sat in a bush and watched as the Starlings, aware of her presence, flew straight into the reeds. Golden Plover – 15th October

Today 6 Dunlin have been feeding along the shoreline on the Slurry Lagoon and around 90 Golden Plover have been resting in the shallow water. Over 8 Snipe are hidden amongst the reeds. RW.

Redwing and Brambling – 14th October

Good day for passage today with 35 Redwing SW, 2 Brambling, 2 Redpoll, 1 Jay, 7 Siskin and 30 Golden Plover flying over.

Later in the day 56 Fieldfare went through, a Yellow-legged Gull settled on the Slurry Lagoon with around 1,000 Grey-lag Geese and about 2,000 Starlings came in to roost in the reed bed. RW.

Green Sandpiper – 12th September

This morning there was a Green Sandpiper, Greenshank, Pintail and two Water Rail on the Slurry Lagoon. A Hobby was seen flying over, carrying prey.

Later in the day there were four Water Rail and one Golden Plover and a Hobby hawking insects. At dusk another Greenshank flew in. RW.
