Water Rail – 12th May

This morning a pair of Water Rail were seen on the Slurry Lagoon, with a chick. The Cuckoo was singing from the Slurry Lagoon and Large Gravel Pit all morning. Up to six Swifts were foraging over the north end of the Deep Pit and Slurry Lagoon, with sometimes a small flock of House Martins. RJP.

A Hobby was seen over the Slurry Lagoon and 3 LRPs a Greenshank and 2 Wood Sandpipers were on the Ecopark along with 2 Yellow Wagtails.  IEP.

Whinchat – 5th May

This morning a female Winchat was on the Ecopark along with a Yellow Wagtail and 3 LRPs.
A Hobby passed over the Deep Pit heading south and there were six Common Terns on the Deep Pit. IEP.

Later on a male Whinchat was reported on the Ecopark. JDn/RW.

Five Holly Blues, five Green Hairstreaks and a Dingy Skipper were seen around the Deep Pit and along the Lower Path. PS.

Brown Argus – 30th April

This morning there were three Common Terns displaying over the Deep Pit and a teneral Common Blue Damselfly was found at the back of the Large Gravel Pit. Four Green Hairstreaks and two Dingy Skippers were seen on the Butterfly Bank. PS.

In the afternoon a Brown Argus was also seen on the Butterfly Bank. RW.

Common Tern – 26th April

This morning a female Marsh Harrier was hunting over the Slurry Lagoon reed-bed. She then circled for height and flew to the NE. Two Common Terns were over the Deep Pit and then flew SE towards Holme Pierrepont. A Red Kite was chased across the site by a Carrion Crow, N to S and a Curlew flew over the site, S to N. There were three Garden Warblers singing and four Lesser Whitethroats singing. PS.

Little Ringed Plover – 25th April

This morning a Little Ringed Plover was calling on the Ecopark. There was an Arctic Tern along the river and Deep Pit. A Green Sandpiper was over the river in the field with 2 Shelducks. A House Martin was over the Deep Pit and a Kingfisher was on the river near the bridge with a Grey Wagtail. A couple of Lesser Whitethroat were singing on site and a Cuckoo was in the Haven/Large Gravel Pit area.  IEP.

Arctic Tern – 21st April

This morning, an Arctic Tern was briefly over the Deep Pit (9am) before flying off south-east. A Garden Warbler was singing and showing well by the river near the railway bridge and a Grasshopper Warbler was reeling below the bench at the north-end of the Pylon Path, below the pylon. Reed Warblers were heard in the Slurry Lagoon reed bed and a Raven was over the Slurry Lagoon. Two Peregrines were on the new pylon, one brought prey in, which was not far of its own size. Little Ringed Plover on the Ecopark. IEP.

Siskin – 8th March

This morning there were eight Siskins feeding in Alders along the Access Track, a Red Kite glided over the Large Gravel Pit and an Oystercatcher flew over the Deep Pit towards the river. A Chiffchaff was singing along the Ouse Dyke, another along the Lower Path and one along the Riverside Walk. PS/DM/RJP/IEP.
