There were at least four Clouded Yellows on site this morning, along the Deep Pit bank facing the gravel pits. There were also three Brown Argus found and several other common species, as well as a variety of dragonflies. A Hobby was seen by the railway bridge. PS.

White Wagtail – 19th April
This morning there were House Martins with the other hirundines over the river, along with three Common Sandpipers, and a Marsh Tit was found in the Deep Pit. In the afternoon a male Wheatear was on the field across the river and two White Wagtails were on the Wader Scrape. RW.
Kittiwake – 13th April
More evidence that migration is underway – an adult Kittiwake rested for about half an hour on the Deep Pit mid morning and earlier the first Common Tern of the year was on one of the Tern Platforms and a Common Sandpiper was feeding along the river bank. Warbler numbers are increasing with a number of Chiffchaffs singing around the Reserve and at least two Willow Warblers and a couple of Blackcaps were also seen. RW. JMD.
Black Redstart – 12th April
This morning a female/1st summer male Black Redstart was seen on the dry end of the Slurry Lagoon. Three Wheatears were on the Severn Trent fields. Later there was a Willow Warbler singing in the Deep Pit and seven Little Ringed Plover on the Wader Scrape. RW.
In the afternoon there were two female/1st summer male Black Redstarts on the dry end of the Slurry Lagoon and five Sand Martins and a Swallow passed through. PS.
In the early evening a Curlew flew through, a Green Sandpiper was on a riverside flood and the Barn Owl was hunting over the reserve. RW.
Twite – 10th April
Early this afternoon a Twite was tentatively identified on the Wader Scrape. At least five Little Ringed Plover were present and a Little Egret. Later the Twite returned giving good views and the identification was confirmed. Three Sand Martins were briefly seen over the Deep Pit. PS.
Mediterranean Gull – 2nd April
An adult Mediterranean Gull was with a cluster of Black-headed Gulls on the Deep Pit late evening before they all flew off in the direction of Hoveringham. JMD.
Little Ringed Plover – 20th March
The Little Ringed Plover is still on the Wader Scrape, along with a Lapwing, 24 Gadwall and a male Goldeneye. Two Cetti’s Warblers were heard, one in the Haven, the other in the Deep Pit, as well as several Water Rail and there were two Snipe near the Large Gravel Pit. In an ash tree on the railway embankment there was a pre-roost flock of 57 Linnets. PS.
Woodcock – 4th December
As dusk turned into dark a Woodcock flew along the Deep Pit bank and onto the Causeway, landing a few yards away in the gloom. Hundreds of Jackdaws and Rooks were feeding during the afternoon on the sweetcorn stubbles and towards dusk they were trailing across the sky on their way to roost. PS.
Pintail – 18th September
The Pintail is still present on the Slurry Lagoon and the Goldeneye is on the Deep Pit. Some Yellow Wagtails and Meadow Pipits are still passing through but there are very few Swallows about. Some Siskins were also heard passing over. PS
Whinchat – 28th August
There was a report this morning of a Whinchat seen on the Deep Pit fence posts near the railway bridge. Also a group of 25 to 35 Black-tailed Godwits flew through and a Hobby was seen.
