Brambling – 17th January

This morning a Brambling was seen amongst a flock of about 50 Chaffinches along the Ouse Dyke. Two Shelduck were on the Slurry Lagoon and the Black Swan was still with the Mute Swans and geese across the river. Two skeins of Pink-feet flew over and a single bird was with the Grey-lag flock.  PS.

In the afternoon a Little Gull was briefly on the Slurry Lagoon and the Barn Owl was seen hunting around the Gravel Pits.  NM.

Lesser Whitethroat – 19th April

This morning more warblers had arrived on site and a Lesser Whitethroat was singing in bushes on the south side of the Slurry Lagoon dry end and two Whitethroats were also singing, near the river and Wader Scrape. There was also a mixed flock of hirundines over the Deep Pit and railway bridge. Five Shelduck were on the Slurry Lagoon early on before flying off NE but were later replaced with two more. A Wheatear was on the Wader Scrape with two Oystercatchers.  PS.

Curlew – 6th April

The sun brought out the butterflies this morning with 11 Brimstones, 5 Peacocks, 2 Small Tortoiseshells, 1 Comma and 1 Orange-tip being seen. A Curlew called as it flew over and three Sand Martins were seen near the river, also a Blackcap sang briefly near the Haven. On the Slurry Lagoon two Shelduck were present first thing. PS.

Chiffchaff – 13th January

The weather was cold with a dusting of snow on the ground when we met at dawn to do the bird count. Four Chiffchaffs flew from the pipe where the Ouse Dyke flows from under Teal Close, where they may have been roosting. Other birds recorded included Grey Wagtail, Lesser Redpolls, Little Egrets, a Shelduck and over 400 Teal. PS.
