Short-eared Owl – 8th November

During this morning’s Bird Count a Short-eared Owl was seen flying beside the Wader Scrape and then across the grassland beside the Large Gravel Pit, most of the time mobbed by crows. On the bank in front of the Wader Scrape two Muntjacs were also seen, a male pursuing a female, but they soon disappeared into the Boundary Hedge. There were also plenty of thrushes and finches about, with lots of Redpoll and Redwing.  PS.

Pied Flycatcher – 12th April

This morning a lot of migrants were about and a Pied Flycatcher was found in the Boundary hedge. It later moved along the hedge to Willow Pond. There were also two Little Ringed Plovers on the Wader Scrape, two Common Terns in the Deep Pit, a Common Sandpiper on the river bank, two Yellow Wagtails on the Causeway and there were lots more warblers about including Willow, Sedge and Garden Warblers and Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs. There were a few Swallows and Sand Martins and one House Martin. Also seen were a Jay and a singing Treecreeper. PS.

Hobby – 25th May

This morning the site hosted a walk for the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers Club. There were up to three Cuckoos heard and one was seen flying and perching to call, along the Boundary Hedge. A Hobby flew low over the Slurry Lagoon towards the river and the Little Ringed Plovers were on the Wader Scrape. Plenty of warblers were singing and some of the Southern Marsh orchids were in flower. About 100 Swifts were hawking insects over the site for the whole morning. PS.

Curlew – 17th September

This afternoon two Curlews were heard calling on the Slurry Lagoon and eventualy flew off to the south. There were also two Green Sandpipers and later a single Golden Plover flew in, calling loudly. There were still some Swallows by the railway bridge and two Yellow Wagtails flew over the site. Along the access track there were two Commas and along the Boundary Hedge two more Commas and a Red Admiral. PS.
