An adult Med Gull was preening for some time on the Slurry Lagoon late afternoon. Also present was a Black-tailed Godwit and a Green Sandpiper plus an adult Little Ringed Plover. The Gadwall reported the other day with eleven ducklings has increased her brood to an incredible fourteen! JMD.

Little Ringed Plover – 26th June
This morning there was a juvenile Little Ringed Plover on the Slurry Lagoon. There were still eight Red-crested Pochard and the Gadwall had all eleven ducklings and the Mallard still had her five. There were good numbers of Small Skippers about and two Black-tailed Skimmers and one Four-spotted Chaser with some Red-eyed Damselflies on the Small Gravel Pit. PS. AE
A juvenile Little Ringed Plover was feeding on the Slurry Lagoon’s waters’ edge for some time this afternoon. There were also still four Red-crested Pochards on the Slurry and the Gadwall still has all eleven of her ducklings. Unexpectedly not many butterflies were about – the most interesting being a Small Skipper. JMD.
Little Ringed Plover – 17th May
The Little Ringed Plover was back, displaying over the dry end of the Slurry this afternoon. Later it was seen feeding at the wet end. The pair of Yellow Wagtails were on the Causeway again and a Grasshopper Warbler was singing at the back of the Gravel Pits. PS.
Little Ringed Plover – 13th May
A sudden downpour this afternoon produced three Little Ringed Plovers on the Slurry Lagoon. For a while they were feeding on the shoreline and then one started to fly over the lagoon calling in a display flight. Soon the other two joined it and all three were calling as they gained height and continued their journey. PS.
Common Snipe – 28th July
A Common Snipe was feeding along the edge of the reeds at the left-hand side of the Slurry Lagoon this afternoon and a Little Ringed Plover and a Green Sandpiper were also present on the Slurry. JMD.
Green Sandpiper – 23rd July
Two Green Sandpipers were again on the Slurry Lagoon – an adult and a juvenile – resting and feeding. Also feeding along the Slurry edge was a Little Ringed Plover and among the gulls were at least three Yellow-legged Gulls. A new brood of five Tuftie ducklings were the first for the year and again along the path edges to the west of the Slurry Lagoon quite a number of Long-winged Coneheads were seen although they weren’t stridulating. Wood Sandpiper – 14th July
A Wood Sandpiper was seen briefly this afternoon on the Slurry Lagoon, a Redshank and a Yellow-legged Gull were also present. At the north end of the Slurry Lagoon there was an Essex Skipper along with three male and one female Long-winged Coneheads.
Later in the afternoon an adult Mediterranean Gull, three juvenile Little Ringed Plovers and two Shoveler visited the Slurry Lagoon. RW.
Peregrine – 6th June
An adult Peregrine was seen with prey, possibly a Jackdaw, accompanied by a juvenile bird on one of the pylons. The juvenile Peregrine later flew off down river. Two Little Ringed Plovers were seen on the Slurry Lagoon. RW.
Peregrine Falcon – 19th April
This morning a Peregrine Falcon flew over and perched on the nearby electricity pylon for a few minutes before moving to the next pylon to the north-east. A Common Sandpiper flew round the Slurry Lagoon and a Little Ringed Plover was displaying over the Slurry.
In the early afternoon one Common Tern appeared on the newly recommissioned Tern Platforms. One Swift and two House Martins were seen and a Redstart was heard alarm calling. A Tawny Owl was observed in the willow tree. RW.
Later two Avocets settled on the Slurry Lagoon and a male Marsh Harrier flew through. PS. RW.
