Bittern – 12th March

This evening a Bittern flew out of the reed bed and circled up high before flying off to the West. RW.

Today during the bird count 16 Chiffchaffs were recorded and seven Cetti’s Warblers. PS.

Tawny Owl – 11th March

This morning the Jack Snipe was bobbing in its usual spot on the Wader Scrape. There were six Chiffchaffs, four of them singing, seven singing Cetti’s Warblers and five Water Rail were also heard. A Weasel was seen at the bottom of the bank in front of the Wader Scrape, climbing in the hedge as well as running up and down. On the Ouse Dyke a mixed flock of songbirds was mobbing a roosting Tawny Owl. PS.

This morning a Chiffchaff was singing from the power line along the Lower Path. The Jack Snipe was in his usual position, still bobbing. SC.

This morning a Chiffchaff was along the Ouse Dyke and four Stonechats were seen together in front of the sub-station. JDn.

Stonechat – 29th January

This morning the Ouse Dyke produced Green Sandpiper, Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail, Chiffchaff and two Little Egrets. On the rough grassland in front of the substation there was a pair of Stonechats and on the Wader Scrape there were two Snipe. PS.

Green Sandpiper – 27th January

The Green Sandpiper was showing well again in the Ouse Dyke. Also seen there was a Water Rail, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Chiffchaff. An amazing fifteen Dunnocks were counted at the bird table. SC.

Treecreeper – 16th January

At mid-day today a Treecreeper and a Chiffchaff were seen along the Ouse Dyke. JMD.

A Chiffchaff was seen feeding along the Ouse Dyke today. JMD.

Red-crested Pochard – 11th September

This morning, during the bird count, two Red-crested Pochard were seen on the Slurry Lagoon. Large mixed flocks of warblers were foraging around the site, mainly Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps but Whitethroats, a Willow Warbler and a Garden Warbler were also seen. Several family groups of Swallows were also going through during the morning. PS.

Redstart – 9th April

This morning a male Redstart was seen in the Plantation, near the Causeway end. A Sedge Warbler was singing down the bank and at least five Willow Warblers were singing around the site. Up to fifteen Chiffchaffs were singing and two Blackcaps, and a Swallow was with the Sand Martins by the railway bridge. At least two Wheatears were still on the ploughed field beyond the Wader Scrape and there was still one Goldeneye on the Large Gravel Pit. A Small Tortoiseshell and a Brimstone were seen in flight. There was also a report of a distant view of a Red Kite, towards Carlton.
