Curlew – 17th March

This morning the Little Ringed Plover was seen again on the Wader Scrape, along with 32 Gadwall, 2 Teal and a male Goldeneye. A Curlew flew over the site and there was a mixed flock of Pied Wagtails and Meadow Pipits on the dry end of the Slurry Lagoon. PS.

Pintail – 18th September

The Pintail is still present on the Slurry Lagoon and the Goldeneye is on the Deep Pit. Some Yellow Wagtails and Meadow Pipits are still passing through but there are very few Swallows about. Some Siskins were also heard passing over. PS

Pintail – 16th September

This morning there was a female Pintail and a female Golden-eye on the Slurry Lagoon, as well as three Red-crested Pochards and good numbers of Gadwall, Shoveler and Teal. There were about 80 Wigeon on the Large Gravel Pit and Swallows, House Martins, Meadow Pipits and Yellow Wagtails were passing through. On the Lower Path a Muntjac was seen. In the afternoon a swarm of Migrant Hawkers was seen along the Lower Path. PS.

Chiffchaff – 15th March

This afternoon, during the brief sunny spell, a Chiffchaff was heard singing in the Deep Pit, also four Meadow pipits flew over. The Cetti’s Warbler was heard singing and a Shelduck is still on the Slurry Lagoon. RW.

Hen Harrier – 15th October

The morning was frosty and the mist made the lagoons look like they were smoking. The geese were spectacular when they crowded into the lagoons, flying silhouetted against the mist. At about 08.15, on the Slurry Lagoon the Lapwings and Black-headed Gulls suddenly rose and flew out from the reedbeds. I looked but could see no raptor. Ten minutes later a crow gave its raptor mobbing call and there was a ringtail hen harrier, its white rump flashing as it dodged the crow. Two crows pursued the harrier aggressively and drove it off so that it left the site flying north-east, but it must have spent ten minutes in the reed bed before the crows started chasing it. There were still Skylarks trickling through with a couple of Meadow Pipits, and a flock of Siskins went over. Later three Grey Wagtails passed to the south and two Golden Plovers flew in, calling loudly. The two Pintail were still on the Slurry Lagoon and a female Golden-eye was on the Deep Pit. PS.

Peregrine – 15th January

A Peregrine was seen this afternoon, catching a Redwing and carrying it to a pylon to eat. There was a large flock of Teal on the Deep Pit, possibly over 400, and a flock of 73 Lapwings joined them to rest on the ice. Four Meadow Pipits and a Yellowhammer were also seen. PS.

Rock Pipit – 13th October

Today there were several migrants seen at the site, including a Rock Pipit, three Fieldfares, Redpoll and a Dunlin as well as small numbers of Skylark and Meadow Pipits. RW.

Caspian Gull – 27th September

During the ‘Patchwatch’ a Caspian Gull was tentatively identified on the Slurry Lagoon. Also present was a Dunlin, two Green Sandpipers, three Jays and the Pintail. There were still several species of warbler in evidence and a light passage of Skylarks and Meadow Pipits was noted. The Peregrine was seen again and two skeins of Pink-footed Geese were seen flying west. Seventy-six species of bird were noted during the day. PS.
