Goosander – 19th November

A male Goosander was on the Trent early afternoon and later two Little Egrets flying together loomed out of the mist to be swallowed up again almost instantly. The two Red-crested Pochard were again present on the Large Gravel Pit but with conditions deteriorating it was impossible to see across the Slurry Lagoon and only the shapes of geese flying in to roost were discernible. However the weather didn’t put off the Cetti’s as at least one was singing from the east side of the Slurry. JMD.

Little Egret – 10th October

During the monthly bird count this morning a flock of eight Little Egrets flew downriver, through the reserve. Later a ninth bird settled for a short time on the Slurry Lagoon. A Peregrine was seen stooping at Wood Pigeons attracted by the maize spilt during the harvest and around three thousand Grey Lag and Canada geese were also gleening the stubble. A Curlew flew over the site and a Dunlin was on the Slurry. Other migrants seen were a small flock of Swallows, several Skylarks, some Redpoll and a Siskin. There were also three Cetti’s Warblers heard singing. PS.

Little Egret – 7th September

A Little Egret was on the river bank early afternoon but the Lagoons themselves were quiet except for three Common Snipe although duck numbers are starting to build up now. JMD.

Ant Swarm – 8th August

During the Bird Count this morning there was an ant swarm that attracted a flock of over 500 Black-headed Gulls. There were also some Common Terns catching the ants and three Hobbies. Two Curlews stopped briefly on the Slurry Lagoon and a Green Sandpiper was amongst the Lapwings. A Little Egret was on the Large Gravel Pit with some Grey Herons and about twenty Cormorants, before joining the gulls on the Slurry Lagoon. Several Roesel’s Bush Crickets and Long-winged Coneheads were also found. On the Lower Path five Brimstones were found along with Commas, Red Admiral and Peacocks. PS.

Little Egret – 22nd July

On the Slurry Lagoon this afternoon there were one Little Egret, 43 Common Tern, 102 Lapwing, one Common Sandpiper, two Green Sandpipers, two Yellow-legged Gulls and a Water Rail. RW.

Little Egret – 19th February

A Little Egret flew into the eastern end of the triangular field this evening and about 100 Linnets came to roost in the Deep Pit. A Cetti’s Warbler called from the Deep Pit and two Shelduck were on the Slurry Lagoon. 33 Mute Swans also came in to roost after feeding in a rape field along the Trent. PS.

Little Egret – 13th February

A Little Egret was standing on the edge of the ex Fat Hen Field this afternoon and three Shelduck were on the Slurry Lagoon. The number of Linnets roosting in the Deep Pit has risen to 72. JMD.

A Little Egret flew fairly high, NE across the Slurry Lagoon at dusk this evening. PS.

Goosander – 27th January

This afternoon a Peregrine flew from the river over the Large Gravel Pit, causing consternation amongst the Wigeon. Later a Little Egret was seen standing quietly in a corner of the same pit and towards dusk two male Goosander were also seen swimming and diving on the pit. A Cetti’s Warbler was heard calling from the Slurry Lagoon reed bed and several Water Rail were calling or seen at several parts of the site. PS.

Bittern and Little Egrets – 14th January

A Bittern was seen again in the Deep Pit (RW). It was seen a couple of times, walking on the ice and flying between reed beds. Perhaps they will stay for the winter.

Two Little Egrets were seen in the Ouse Dyke (RD).
