This morning, during the Bird Count, a Cuckoo was calling for at least an hour. By the railway bridge a Hobby was seen trying very hard to flush out a Swallow over about ten minutes. A Painted Lady and a Ringlet were seen amongst other butterflies. PS.

Mediterranean Gull – 5th June
Early on this morning an adult Mediterranean Gull was on the site, it seemed to be inspecting the Black-headed Gull colony. It flew around the nests on the Slurry Lagoon and then the ones on the Deep Pit, calling, perhaps trying to find a mate. Anyway it was unlucky and soon flew off. Later a Hobby paid a surprise visit to the Swallows by the railway bridge. On the river there were five recently fledged Herons. PS.
Hobby – 21st May
This morning, during the Warbler Walk, nine warblers were seen or heard (just Grasshopper Warbler missing). A Hobby attacked the Swallows at the Railway Bridge, but they saw it coming. The Slurry Lagoon Mute Swans now have eight cygnets and there are several Coot families and the Great Crested Grebes on the Slurry Lagoon still have their chick. Earlier on, at about 08.00hrs a Cuckoo was singing from an ash tree beside the railway line. PS.
Whimbrel – 11th May
This afternoon there were three Whimbrel on one of the new islands on the Slurry Lagoon. A Hobby was seen and a Hairy Dragonfly was on the Small Gravel Pit. RW.

This evening there were three Hobbies hunting insects over the Large Gravel Pit. JMD.
Redstart – 6th September
This afternoon a female/juvenile Redstart was seen beside the Slurry Lagoon, near the access gate, and a Hobby was harassing the Swallows near the railway bridge. SC, PG.
Hobby – 23rd August
This morning two Hobbies were seen during the Butterfly Census. Fifty-five Common Blue butterflies were counted. SC.
Red-crested Pochard – 21st August
This morning a juvenile Red-crested Pochard was on the Slurry Lagoon. A Water Rail was also seen along the reeds at the back of the lagoon. Later a Raven flew south across the Large Gravel Pit. PS
A male and female of Volucella zonaria, the Hornet Hoverfly, were feeding on Buddleja by the metal gates. PS
In the afternoon two Common Sandpipers were seen on the riverbank and a Hobby flew over. JMD
Wigeon – 9th August
This morning a Wigeon and a juvenile Shelduck were on the Slurry Lagoon. In the afternoon a Hobby was seen over the Gravel Pits. PS.
Hobby – 3rd July
A Hobby was seen hawking for insects above the Causeway this morning. Some Pyramidal Orchids are now out and a Gatekeeper was seen. PS.
