Cuckoo – 8th May

This morning there were two cuckoos seen by the Small Gravel Pit. One was calling and the other was silent, so presumably was a female. Later a male was calling on the southern edge of the Slurry Lagoon and a silent Cuckoo was also present. These both then flew to the railway land where another male was calling. So there were at least three Cuckoos present and may have been five. There were also thirteen singing Garden Warblers and a Green Hairstreak was seen on the Causeway. PS.

Swift – 4th May

This morning a flock of about twenty-five Swifts was feeding over the Slurry Lagoon. Over the Deep Pit there were about twenty Sand Martins, twenty-eight Swallows and four House Martins. There are now ten singing Garden Warblers. PS.

Cuckoo – 26th April

This morning two Cuckoos were calling from opposite sides of the Slurry Lagoon. There were seventeen singing Chiffchaffs, ten singing Willow Warblers, fourteen singing Blackcaps, four singing Garden Warblers, seven singing Lesser Whitethroats, twelve singing Whitethroats, thirteen singing Sedge Warblers and ten singing Reed Warblers. Little Gull – 19th April

Two Little Ringed Plovers and a Green Sandpiper were seen on the flash across the river. A Common Tern was seen over the Deep Pit and a Little Gull was picking hatching flies from the water surface. A Garden Warbler was singing from bushes in the Deep Pit and a Yellow Wagtail flew upstream. PS.

Spotted Flycatcher – 25th August

This morning a flock of about 140 House Martins, 40 Swallows and one or two Sand Martins were on the wires by the railway bridge. Also there were two juvenile Pied Wagtails and a juvenile Yellow Wagtail. Along the Lower Path in a walnut tree near the signal box were two Spotted Flycatchers with Blackcaps, Garden Warbler and Lesser Whitethroat. PS.

There was also a report of a Great White Egret circling the site late morning. NH.

Cuckoo – 21st April

This morning a Grasshopper Warbler and three Garden Warblers were singing. During the guided Walk a Cuckoo sang from the large willow by the Large Gravel Pit and two Common Terns were seen over the Deep Pit. Four Green Hairstreaks were seen, two were females laying eggs. PS

Cuckoo – 21st April

This morning a Cuckoo was calling from the ash trees along the railway line, before flying out across the Slurry Lagoon and then to the river. Eight Common Terns were making a lot of noise over the Deep Pit. A Grasshopper Warbler was singing from the middle of the Slurry Lagoon reed bed and a Garden Warbler was singing near the railway bridge. PS.

White Stork – 19th April

This morning two Mediterranean Gulls flew over the Deep Pit to the north. A little later an identifiably second pair flew into the Deep Pit and then carried on their way north. At just after mid-day a White Stork was seen flying high to the west (RW). Also present was a Grasshopper Warbler and a Garden Warbler. In the Slurry Lagoon reed bed a Water Rail was heard calling. Barn Owl – 8th October

This morning, during the bird count, a Barn Owl was seen. Also two Ravens were on the pylons, Siskin and Redpoll were about as well as one Tree Sparrow along the Lower Path. Eight Snipe were seen dropping into the Slurry Lagoon reed bed. By the Small Gravel Pit a late Garden warbler was sunning itself. PS.

Red Kite – 28th April

Today, at about 12.30, a Red Kite was seen flying over the reserve. TL.

Earlier a Grasshopper Warbler was reeling beside the Large Gravel Pit and some more Garden Warblers had arrived. On the Slurry Lagoon was a flock of 97 Tufted Duck, probably mostly passage birds. PS.
