Sedge Warbler – 8th April

This morning, during the bird count, a Sedge Warbler was singing behind the Large Gravel Pit. There were also three Willow Warblers and eight Oystercatchers on the flooded field across the river. PS.

Willow Warbler – 7th April

This morning, three Oystercatchers were flying over the Slurry Lagoon, piping as they went, four Swallows and two Sand Martins were also seen. Over the Deep Pit three House Martins were seen flying east and a Willow Warbler was singing on the railway side of the Slurry Lagoon. Also heard were six Chiffchaffs, two Blackcaps and three Cetti’s Warblers. PS.

In the evening a Common Tern came in to circle the tern platforms before flying off. JMD

Lesser Whitethroat – 8th April

This morning three Willow Warblers, a Whitethroat and two Sedge Warblers were singing as well as plenty of Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs and a Lesser Whitethroat was singing as it passed through. At least four Water Rails were calling from the Slurry Lagoon reedbed and two Oystercatchers flew noisily over. Butterflies seen included Brimstone, Orange-tip, Green-veined White, Peacock, Comma and Speckled Wood. PS.

This morning a Sedge Warbler was singing. Also a Whitethroat, Willow Warbler and Swallow were seen. RW.

Willow Warbler – 30th March

This morning a Willow Warbler was singing in the Boundary Hedge. JDn.

In the afternoon a Swallow was by the Railway Bridge with eleven Sand Martins and two Wheatears were on the Severn/Trent fields. RW.

Red-crested Pochard – 11th September

This morning, during the bird count, two Red-crested Pochard were seen on the Slurry Lagoon. Large mixed flocks of warblers were foraging around the site, mainly Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps but Whitethroats, a Willow Warbler and a Garden Warbler were also seen. Several family groups of Swallows were also going through during the morning. PS.

Egyptian Goose – 19th April

This morning at least 11 Willow Warblers were singing and many more Blackcaps were in. Three Water Rails were heard and an Egyptian goose flew over the Slurry Lagoon. PS.

In the Afternoon a male Redstart was found on the Causeway bank, two Yellow Wagtails and nine Wheatears were in the field beyond the Wader Scrape and four Common Terns were on the tern platforms. JMD.

Red Kite – 10th April

This morning, on the bird count, lots more warblers were in, with several Blackcaps, Willow Warblers and Sedge Warblers singing and at least one Whitethroat. The Wheatears were still on the field beyond the Wader Scrape and Swallow and House Martins were seen. PS

In the afternoon a Red Kite was seen over the site. RW.

Redstart – 9th April

This morning a male Redstart was seen in the Plantation, near the Causeway end. A Sedge Warbler was singing down the bank and at least five Willow Warblers were singing around the site. Up to fifteen Chiffchaffs were singing and two Blackcaps, and a Swallow was with the Sand Martins by the railway bridge. At least two Wheatears were still on the ploughed field beyond the Wader Scrape and there was still one Goldeneye on the Large Gravel Pit. A Small Tortoiseshell and a Brimstone were seen in flight. There was also a report of a distant view of a Red Kite, towards Carlton.

Willow Warbler – 3rd April

This morning there were about twenty Sand Martins by the railway bridge, which were briefly joined by a lone Swallow. Beside the Slurry Lagoon a Willow Warbler sang briefly and a Little Ringed Plover flew over. There are now at least fifteen Chiffchaffs singing around the site. PS. SC.
