Cuckoo – 21st April

This morning a Grasshopper Warbler and three Garden Warblers were singing. During the guided Walk a Cuckoo sang from the large willow by the Large Gravel Pit and two Common Terns were seen over the Deep Pit. Four Green Hairstreaks were seen, two were females laying eggs. PS

Redstart – 19th April

This morning two Reed Warblers were singing from the Slurry Lagoon reed bed, two Whitethroats and a Lesser Whitethroat were also singing. A Common Tern was flying around the tern platforms but left after a short while. On the Causeway a female Redstart was seen catching insects from the fencing and, near the Slurry Lagoon dry end, a male Redstart was also seen. PS.

Arctic Tern – 14th April

During this morning’s Bird Count, a lone Arctic Tern flew through and a Little Gull flew through with a Black-headed Gull flock. A Whitethroat was singing near the river and 33 Blackcaps, 19 Chiffchaffs, 16 Willow Warblers and 2 Sedge Warblers were heard singing. PS.

Red-crested Pochard – 13th April

The male Red-crested Pochard was back on the Large Gravel Pit this morning. A single House Martin was seen over the Slurry Lagoon and two Sedge Warblers were singing in the nearby reed bed. PS

Pied Flycatcher – 12th April

This morning a female Pied Flycatcher was seen briefly near the bird table in the Deep Pit. There were two Sedge Warblers singing and six Willow Warblers. Two Peregrines were near the new pylon, the female took prey from the male (against his wishes). PS

Sedge Warbler – 11th April

This morning there were four Willow Warblers singing and a Sedge Warbler was singing at the back of the Large Gravel Pit. The site seemed to be awash with Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs. PS.

Red Kite – 10th April

This morning, during the RSPB walk, a Water Rail flew across the gap in front of the Causeway bench. A Red Kite flew to the west, high above the site and four House Martins were foraging above the Lower Path, close to the signal box. PS

Brambling – 8th April

This morning a Ringed Plover flew over the site towards the flooded fields by the Trent. A Raven was being mobbed by five or six Carrion Crows as it investigated the sheep and lambs across the river. A stunning male Brambling was in the Deep Pit, close to the bird table, showing really well and a Willow Warbler was singing from the Slurry Lagoon hedgerow. PS

Red-crested Pochard – 7th April

This morning there were still around twenty Sand Martins and a Swallow by the railway bridge. A mixed flock of Starlings and about twenty-five Fieldfares were also present. The Willow Warbler was still in the Deep Pit and a male Red-crested Pochard was on the Large Gravel Pit. PS.

Willow Warbler – 6th April

This morning a Little Ringed Plover was seen flying over the Slurry Lagoon dry end towards the ‘Eco-Park’. Thirty Sand Martins and a Swallow were foraging beside the railway bridge and lots more Blackcaps had arrived. There was a Willow Warbler singing in the north end of the Deep Pit and later in the Slurry Lagoon. PS.
