Woodcock – 4th February
A Woodcock was seen this afternoon close to the Large Gravel Pit, where there were unusually high numbers of Tufted Duck present. The Tufted Duck/Pochard hybrid was also seen on the river. PS
Bittern – 1st February
This morning a Bittern was standing on the ice at the eastern end of the Deep Pit. The water is partial frozen again allowing for quite good views before it crept back into the reeds and a single Shelduck was sitting on one of the Tern Platforms. JMD.
Redshank – 31st January
This morning a Redshank was seen on the river bank and four Tree Sparrows with Linnets and Reed Buntings, on the north east bank of the Deep Water Pit. PS
In the afternoon a Cetti’s Warbler was heard calling in the Deep Pit and later a Bittern came in to roost in its usual spot.
Goosander – 27th January
This afternoon a Peregrine flew from the river over the Large Gravel Pit, causing consternation amongst the Wigeon. Later a Little Egret was seen standing quietly in a corner of the same pit and towards dusk two male Goosander were also seen swimming and diving on the pit. A Cetti’s Warbler was heard calling from the Slurry Lagoon reed bed and several Water Rail were calling or seen at several parts of the site. PS.
Shelduck – 25th January
There were five Shelduck on the Slurry Lagoon this afternoon. There were also several Water Rail heard calling. PS.
Bittern – 24th January
A Bittern was seen again this morning flying across the Deep Water to land in the reeds near the northern corner. AE
Later in the afternoon two Shelduck were seen on the Slurry Lagoon. RW.
Cetti’s Warbler – 23rd January
At last a Cetti’s Warbler has been heard again at the lagoons. It was heard in the reed bed on the east side of the Slurry Lagoon. Eight Golden Plover were also seen, flying over. RW.
Bittern – 19th January
The Bittern was seen again this evening dropping into its normal reed bed to roost. PS.
Bittern and Little Egrets – 14th January
A Bittern was seen again in the Deep Pit (RW). It was seen a couple of times, walking on the ice and flying between reed beds. Perhaps they will stay for the winter.
Two Little Egrets were seen in the Ouse Dyke (RD).
