Fieldfare – 23rd October

This morning, during the Patchwatch, 58 species were recorded. Several flocks of Fieldfares were seen as well as good numbers of Redwing. A Bittern was seen on the Slurry Lagoon as well as two Little Egrets. PS.

Bittern – 11th October

This morning seven Redwings were seen along the Slurry Lagoon path. A Bittern crashed into the Slurry Lagoon reed bed, five Cetti’s Warblers were singing and four Water Rail were heard. PS.

Pintail – 3rd January

Happy New Year

This morning a drake Pintail touched down briefly on the Slurry Lagoon and the two Stonechats were together on the Wader Scrape. There were five Little Egrets and a herd of about forty Mute Swans across the river, upstream from the Railway Bridge, and a small flock of mixed Redwings and Song Thrushes on the Wader Scrape, with another four Song Thrushes singing around the reserve. Five Cetti’s Warblers were heard and eleven Golden-eye were on the Large Gravel Pit. PS.

Stonechat – 6th December

This morning a male Stonechat was on the Wader Scrape and later moved to the new trees planted around the sub-station. There were also plenty of Redwings and a flock of Redpoll feeding on the willow herb along the Lower Path. PS.

Short-eared Owl – 8th November

During this morning’s Bird Count a Short-eared Owl was seen flying beside the Wader Scrape and then across the grassland beside the Large Gravel Pit, most of the time mobbed by crows. On the bank in front of the Wader Scrape two Muntjacs were also seen, a male pursuing a female, but they soon disappeared into the Boundary Hedge. There were also plenty of thrushes and finches about, with lots of Redpoll and Redwing. PS.

Stonechat – 13th October

This afternoon a male Stonechat was seen at the back of the Wader Scrape. Two Redwings flew over and four Water Rails were heard calling from the Slurry Lagoon reedbed. PS.

Stonechat – 5th November

This morning a male Stonechat was seen on the tall weeds between the sub-station and the Wader Scrape. There have been up to three in this area for some weeks now. The two Pintail were still resident on the Slurry Lagoon and good numbers of Redwings and Fieldfares were in evidence. PS. In the evening a Bittern was seen in the Deep Pit, flushed by the roosting Starlings. RW.

Woodcock – 17th December

Towards dusk, while watching Redwings coming in to roost in the Deep Pit, a Peregrine was seen flying through, parallel with the pylons. A pre-roost gathering of 37 Magpies collected in the bushes and a Woodcock flew along the bottom of the bank. PS.

Redwing – 12th December

This evening, as the Redwings came in to roost in the scrub on the Deep Pit banks, a white bird was seen amongst them. It was obviously a Redwing but, apart from some streaking on the head, it was almost completely white. The bill was dark, with perhaps a hint of yellow at the base, and the eye looked dark. It was streaked most heavily on the crown with some more on the cheeks and throat. The light was poor and it buried itself in the hawthorn, so views were not perfect, but it was a stunning sight of what was probably a leucistic bird. PS.

Bittern – 5th December

This morning the Bittern was seen in the Deep Pit, flying into a reed bed. There were also four Little Egrets on the Ouse Dyke and good numbers of winter thrushes, Blackbirds, Redwings and Fieldfares. A Weasel was also seen on the bank of the Deep Pit, crossing to and fro. PS.
