Bittern – 9th June

This morning there were two male Cuckoos on the reserve. In the afternoon another male was in the Slurry Lagoon reed-bed. In the late afternoon a Bittern was driven by Black-headed Gulls into the Slurry Lagoon reed-bed. Later it was seen again in the Deep Pit, but the gulls again drove it into the Slurry Lagoon reed-bed. There were also several Hairy Dragonflies and Emperor Dragonflies on the Slurry Lagoon. PS.

Cuckoo – 7th June

This morning a male and a female Cuckoo were on the reserve, eventually flying off across the Trent. Up to ten Swifts were hawking insects over the Slurry Lagoon reed bed and a female Roe Deer was seen on the Severn/Trent fields. PS.

Cuckoo – 1st June

This morning two male and a female Cuckoo were present around the Slurry Lagoon, identified by their calls. Also seen were several Hairy Dragonflies and a Four-spotted Chaser. PS.

Ruddy Shelduck – 24th May

This morning there was at least one Cuckoo calling across the Slurry Lagoon. Later a Ruddy Shelduck and two Egyptian Geese flew across the Large Gravel Pit. Up to twelve Swifts were foraging over the Slurry Lagoon with two House Martins. PS.

Hobby – 12th May

Early on this morning a Cuckoo was calling from the Ash trees by the Slurry Lagoon. Mid-morning a Hobby was seen over the Deep Pit, flying to the east. PS.

Cuckoo – 8th May

This morning there were two cuckoos seen by the Small Gravel Pit. One was calling and the other was silent, so presumably was a female. Later a male was calling on the southern edge of the Slurry Lagoon and a silent Cuckoo was also present. These both then flew to the railway land where another male was calling. So there were at least three Cuckoos present and may have been five. There were also thirteen singing Garden Warblers and a Green Hairstreak was seen on the Causeway. PS.

Cuckoo – 26th April

This morning two Cuckoos were calling from opposite sides of the Slurry Lagoon. There were seventeen singing Chiffchaffs, ten singing Willow Warblers, fourteen singing Blackcaps, four singing Garden Warblers, seven singing Lesser Whitethroats, twelve singing Whitethroats, thirteen singing Sedge Warblers and ten singing Reed Warblers. Jack Snipe – 21st July

During the ‘Insect Safari’ this morning, two Green Sandpiper, a Jack Snipe and a Cuckoo were seen. On the Causeway two Musk Beetles were found. PS.

Wood Sandpiper – 28th April

This morning the Wood Sandpiper was still present on the pools on the ‘Ecopark’. It was briefly joined by a Whimbrel, two Little Ringed Plovers and a male Yellow Wagtail. Today was Patchwatch Day and a total of 74 species of bird were seen, including ten warbler species with Grasshopper Warbler, Swift, House Martin and Cuckoo. PS.

In the evening a Little Gull briefly dropped into the Deep Pit. JDn.

Cuckoo – 21st April

This morning a Grasshopper Warbler and three Garden Warblers were singing. During the guided Walk a Cuckoo sang from the large willow by the Large Gravel Pit and two Common Terns were seen over the Deep Pit. Four Green Hairstreaks were seen, two were females laying eggs. PS
