This morning a Bittern was seen, first flying around the Deep Pit and then over the Slurry Lagoon, there was also a Little Egret in the Deep Pit. The Mute Swans on the Slurry Lagoon now have five cygnets and the pair on the Large Gravel Pit have three. A Cuckoo was heard calling for about an hour from the large willow by the Large Gravel Pit. Bittern – 7th June
Cuckoo – 7th June
This morning a male and a female Cuckoo were on the reserve, eventually flying off across the Trent. Up to ten Swifts were hawking insects over the Slurry Lagoon reed bed and a female Roe Deer was seen on the Severn/Trent fields. PS.
Bee Orchid – 7th June
On the Orchid Walk today the Common Spotted Orchids were still not in flower. Several Southern Marsh Orchids were found however, and lots of hybrid Spotted/Marsh. On the Deep Pit bank opposite the Junction Box there were several Bee Orchids and plenty of Common Blue butterflies. A Large Skipper was seen and a Painted Lady dashed through. PS.
Hairy Dragonfly – 7th June
This afternoon one or perhaps two male Hairy Dragonflies were seen flying around the Gravel Pits and Willow Pond. Later a female was seen ovipositing in Willow Pond. On the Wader Scrape, three families of Little Ringed Plovers were seen. RW. PS.
