Bittern – 12th June

This morning at about 10.00 a Bittern was seen flying fairly high over the Slurry Lagoon reedbed. Two Common Terns attacked it as it tried to circle, and forced it lower and then two Carrion Crows joined in, forcing the Bittern into the reedbed. During the next twenty minutes the Bittern tried twice more to get airborne, but with the same result both times. There were also four male Cuckoos and a male Emperor was seen. PS.

Bittern – 5th December

This morning the Bittern was seen in the Deep Pit, flying into a reed bed. There were also four Little Egrets on the Ouse Dyke and good numbers of winter thrushes, Blackbirds, Redwings and Fieldfares. A Weasel was also seen on the bank of the Deep Pit, crossing to and fro. PS.

Jack Snipe – 29th September

A Jack Snipe was present on the Slurry Lagoon this morning, in front of the bench. The Bittern was still giving short views as it flew across the lagoon and a Little Egret, ringed at Bestwood, was also present. There were also four Pintail and a Red-crested Pochard. RW.

Bittern – 25th September

A Bittern flew across the Slurry Lagoon early in the afternoon. Also present were two Pintail, twelve Snipe and two Cetti’s Warblers. RW.

Bittern – 22nd September

At about midday a Bittern was seen flying across the Slurry Lagoon, dropping into the reed bed to the right of the Causeway bench. As one had been seen earlier dropping in at the same spot it might mean there are two Bitterns in residence. There are now four Pintails also on the Slurry Lagoon. PS.

In the afternoon a juvenile Arctic Tern and a Hobby were seen. RW.

This afternoon there was a report of a Bittern flying across in front of the bench on the Slurry Lagoon. PS.

Arctic Skua – 16th September

This morning at about 10.00 the Bittern was seen on the Slurry Lagoon, walking along the front of the reed bed. There were also four Pintail and a Green Sandpiper present. On the river there were five Common Sandpipers and a Curlew. RW.

In the afternoon, about 15.00 all of the gulls flew up as an Arctic Skua came in. It bathed briefly on the Slurry Lagoon before half-heartedly chasing a few Black-headed Gulls and then it flew off to the north-east. The Cetti’s Warbler was heard calling and so was a Water Rail, and some Swallows went through, going north. Two Buzzards spiralled over and several Yellow Wagtails went through. PS. RW.

Bittern – 2nd September

A Bittern has been seen twice this morning as it flew between the reed beds on the Slurry Lagoon. Also on the Slurry Lagoon were 41 Shoveler, a Little Egret and a Cetti’s Warbler. Later a Clouded Yellow was seen flying along the pathway. RW.

Bittern – 10th February

At about 17.00 a Bittern was seen flying the length of the Deep Pit escorted by two or three Black-headed Gulls, before it crashed into the reed bed at the same point as it did two nights ago. PS.
