Chiffchaff – 13th January

The weather was cold with a dusting of snow on the ground when we met at dawn to do the bird count. Four Chiffchaffs flew from the pipe where the Ouse Dyke flows from under Teal Close, where they may have been roosting. Other birds recorded included Grey Wagtail, Lesser Redpolls, Little Egrets, a Shelduck and over 400 Teal. PS.

Lesser Redpoll – 21st December

A flock of 18 Lesser Redpoll were in the birch trees along the Ouse Dyke early afternoon. There was also a Chiffchaff and a Kingfisher was trying to fish in the muddy water of the Dyke. JMD.

Rough-legged Buzzard – 11th March

This morning, during the bird count, two Rough-legged Buzzards were seen flying over the site. A total of thirteen Common Buzzards were also seen, four Sparrowhawks and three Kestrels, with a Peregrine on Gedling church spire. On the river were a pair of Goosanders and a Lesser Redpoll was feeding in a riverside Ash tree. There were lots of insects about, including Buff-tailed and Red-tailed Bumblebees and Honey Bees, Brimstone, Comma, Small Tortoiseshell and Peacock butterflies. PS et al.

Brambling – 25th October

This afternoon there were two Dunlin feeding amongst the Lapwings and gull flock on the Slurry Lagoon. One Lesser Redpoll flew over and two Bramblings flew up from the hedgerow beside the Ouse Dyke. PS.

Golden Plover – 14th October

This morning there was lots of evidence of migration at the lagoons with a constant trickle of Skylarks flying over. One or two large flocks of Fieldfares also went through and some Redwings are already in the hawthorn hedges. A flock of thirteen Lesser Redpolls dropped onto the bushes on the Deep Pit banks and one or two Siskins are still going through. On the Slurry Lagoon the two Pintail are still present, one beginning to attain the winter plumage of a male, and the Teal and Shoveler are well into developing their winter plumages too. The Lapwing flock is building up as several small flocks came in to join them. Unlike the Lapwings a flock of 18 Golden Plover flew in but decided not to land and disappeared again over the neighbouring farmland. PS.

Little Egrets – 21st November

At least four Little Egrets have been attracted to the Ouse Dyke by the shoal of Dace. There were two male and two female Red-crested Pochard on the Large Gravel Pit, three Golden Plover flew over and four Lesser Redpoll were present. One Cetti’s Warbler was singing from the Slurry Lagoon. PS.

Later in the afternoon another male Red-crested Pochard was spotted bringing the total to five – three males and two females. As dusk approached skein after skein of geese flew in to roost on the Slurry Lagoon. JMD.
