Sacred Ibis – 21st July

A Sacred Ibis graced the Wader Scrapes for a short time around midday today. Although probably an escape it just shows what can turn up. SJ.

Barn Owl – 17th June

Whilst walking towards the Wader Scrape this evening I was startled when a Barn Owl flew right in front of me and disappeared into the trees of the New Plantation. It was quickly located and then I watched it for some time hunting around the Reserve especially the Large Gravel Pit and Wader Scrape areas.

The eight Red-crested Pochard were again present on the Slurry Lagoon. JMD.

Crossbill – 17th June

This morning a Crossbill was heard calling as it flew over the site towards the north-east. There were two Ringed Plover and two Little Ringed Plover on the Wader Scrape and several species of hoverfly were seen along the lower path including Volucella bombylans, Volucella pellucens and the first sighting of Chrysotoxum verralli. Green Sandpiper – 7th June

A Green Sandpiper was pecking about on the Wader Scrape late this afternoon and inspite of the rain a tiny Common Tern chick was peeping out from under mum. JMD.

Ringed Plover – 20th May

There has been a little wader passage this weekend, with 9 Dunlin, 5 Ringed Plover, 4 Little Ringed Plover and one Turnstone still on the Wader Scrape and 2 Oystercatchers, a Common Sandpiper and a Greenshank on the river. Later a Hobby was taken into care after apparently colliding with a fence. PS.

Turnstone – 19th May

In the early afternoon two Ringed Plovers and a Turnstone were seen on the Wader Scrape. RW.

Hobby – 17th May

There were a large number of Swifts feeding over the site this morning, with smaller numbers of hirundines. By the railway bridge a Hobby appeared and stooped towards the Large Gravel Pit. A Cuckoo was calling and an Oystercatcher was on the Wader Scrape. PS.

Garganey – 13th May

This morning there were eight Shelduck and a male Garganey on the Slurry Lagoon. The Wader Scrape had two Little Ringed Plover and two Oystercatchers as well as two Wheatears. There were plenty of warblers singing but still no Grasshopper Warbler. Later in the morning a Hobby flew over near the railway bridge. PS et al.

Patchwatch – 22nd April

The Patchwatch ended on a total of seventy-two species seen during the day. Highlights were a pair of Little Ringed Plovers on the Wader Scrapes and a Common Sandpiper in the Deep Pit. Several common migrants were seen on passage and Sedge and Reed Warbler numbers had been boosted in the night. Otherwise it was an unexceptional day with not a lot of migration in progress. PS.
