This morning at least three Green Hairstreaks were seen around the north end of the Deep Pit, laying eggs on the Bird’s-foot Trefoil. A Brimstone was also seen egg-laying on the Alder Buckthorn by the Pumphouse. Three to four Hobbies were seen hawking insects over the site. (One seen stooping briefly at the Hobbies looked suspiciously like a Merlin, but was very distant.) PS.

Temminck’s Stint – 19th May
This evening three Temminck’s Stints were seen on the scrape in the ‘Ecopark’. RW.
Cuckoo – 19th May
This morning a Warbler Walk was led around the reserve and ten species of warbler were heard. A Cuckoo was heard calling across the Slurry Lagoon and a Hobby appeared briefly by the railway bridge. There were also plenty of butterflies and other insects about. PS.
Turnstone – 19th May
In the early afternoon two Ringed Plovers and a Turnstone were seen on the Wader Scrape. RW.
Blue-tailed Damselfly – 19th May
A teneral Blue-tailed Damselfly was found today sheltering from the breeze on the hedge bordering the Large Gravel Pit and on the grassy embankment under the Railway Bridge a Stoat was watched for some minutes as it dragged a baby rabbit some distance into cover. JMD.
