Recent wildlife sightings at the Netherfield Lagoons Local Nature Reserve, Nottinghamshire as submitted by members of the Netherfield Wildlife Group.

Ringed Plover – 10th June

On the Wader Scrape this morning there were two Ringed Plovers. They were later seen copulating. The Little Ringed Plover pair have produced at least one diminutive chick and there are two pairs of Lapwings with chicks. A Cuckoo was calling from the fence posts around the Deep Pit and a Red-crested Pochard is on the Slurry Lagoon. By the Small Gravel Pit there was a Hairy Dragonfly and a Four-spotted Chaser, as well as several Red-eyed Damselflies and a Small Red-eyed Damselfly. PS.

Marsh Orchid – 5th June

Just in time for tomorrow’s Orchid Walk, the Marsh Orchids are coming into flower. They are much later on this site than on some others.

Marsh Orchid

There are also several Spotted Orchids coming into flower and some Bee Orchids. The Pyramidal orchids are showing flower spikes but they are further off from opening than the other species. PS.

Hairy Dragonfly – 28th May

The warm weather has encouraged the Dragonflies and Damselflies to emerge and several species can be seen around the site. So far Banded Demoiselles, Common Blue Damselflies, Azure Damselflies, Blue-tailed Damselflies, Small Red-eyed Damselflies and Four-spotted Chasers have been seen. A rare species on site, the Large Red Damselfly has been seen twice and this afternoon a Hairy Dragonfly was seen for the first time on the site. RW. PS.

Sunday 27th May – New Life on site

It was very rewarding to see the Pen in the Haven tucking away a tiny newly hatched cygnet. On  the river there were  two Canada Goose families and the school of young Greylags. The lower path was still impassable at the Irish Bridge ( this may need some investigation). The Little Ringed Plover was on its nest while the other bird flew around. Warblers were fairly scarce and there was not a sign of the Swifts or the Cuckoo. SC/AE
