Six Lesser Redpoll were feeding near the Grand Staircase today and at least two Chiffchaff were again seen in the Ouse Dyke together with one Little Egret. The Slurry Lagoon is completely frozen over apart from a small area kept open by the family of Swans. JMD.

Waxwing – 7th January
This afternoon six Waxwings were feeding on hawthorn berries on the east side of the Slurry Lagoon near to the bridge over the Ouse Dyke and a couple of Little Egrets were in and out of the Dyke. JMD.
Waxwing – 30th December
At least 15 Waxwings were again present at the Lagoons this afternoon – they were feeding in low bushes along the river bank near to the steps. JMD.
Lesser Redpoll – 21st December
A flock of 18 Lesser Redpoll were in the birch trees along the Ouse Dyke early afternoon. There was also a Chiffchaff and a Kingfisher was trying to fish in the muddy water of the Dyke. JMD.
Waxwing – 17th December
A flock of about thirty Bohemian Waxwings flew along the Ouse Dyke this afternoon and at least three peeled off from the flock and landed low down in bank-side bushes – the remainder of the flock landed in the tallest tree near to the footbridge until they were flushed and they all flew towards Morrisons. JMD.
Egyptian Goose – 25th October
A single Egyptian Goose flew onto the Slurry Lagoon late afternoon with the Canadas and Greylags. A Little Egret was spotted but no further sightings of the Great White. The Starling roost was again impressive with wave after wave of birds decending into the Slurry reed bed – hard to assess numbers but perhaps between 7 and 8,000 birds in total. JMD RW.
Yellow-legged Gull – 23rd August
A Yellow-legged Gull was among the Lesser Black-backs on the dry end of the Slurry late this afternoon. Still one Red-crested Pochard present on the Slurry Lagoon. JMD.
Spotted Redshank – 19th August
Late afternoon a Spotted Redshank was feeding right at the back of the Slurry Lagoon almost hidden by the vegetation – it flew off towards the Wader Scrape but couldn’t be relocated. Still one Red-crested Pochard on the Slurry Lagoon. JMD.
Little Egret – 10th August
A Little Egret stopped off at our Wader Scrape this evening but it was prevented from feeding by one of the local Herons who harassed it constantly and then chased it away down the Dyke. JMD.
Dunlin – 20th July
A single Dunlin was on our Wader Scrape this evening. Eighteen Common Terns flew in to roost on the Tern Platforms including the only two juveniles to fledge from the Platforms this year. On the Slurry Lagoon at least one Coot chick has hatched from the nest at the back edge of the Lagoon. JMD.
