House Fly

Coenosia tigrina

Description

Over all length 6 - 7mm. A beige fly with red eyes, a hairy thorax and black-spotted abdomen. The distal halves of the hind and mid femora are reddish/brown.

Habitat

Woodland edge and shaded spots. The adults prey on small insects.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread throughout Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and regular at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to September.
