House Fly

Achanthiptera rohrelliformis

Description

Over all length 6 - 7mm. This fly is orange on the thorax and abdomen with red eyes. there is a dark line down the centre of the thorax.

Habitat

Hedgerows and woodland edge. The larvae develop in the detritus at the bottom of the nests of Common Wasps Vespula vulgaris.

Status and distribution

Thinly spread over England and Wales with fewer records from Scotland. Fairly frequent at the reserve.

Best time to see

June to August.
