Fungus Gnat

Mycetophiliid sp.

Description

These are small flies, with long legs, fairly long bodies and a domed thorax. They are often pale orangey/brown with blackish markings. There are over 1,000 species in over 200 genera. The species depicted is probably in the family Mycetophilidae.

Habitat

Damp woodland where fungi are plentiful. Most of the larvae feed on fungi.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread throughout Britain where fungi are common. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

March to November.
