Chironomus dilutus

Description

Over all length 8 to 10mm. The thorax is buff with three strong black marks. There are several very similar species so this is only tentatively identified as Chironomus dilutus.

Habitat

Lake and pond edges with good water quality. The larvae develop in the mud on the pond floor.

Status and distribution

Widespread and common throughout most of Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

June to August.
