Black Fly

Description

Very small dark flies. The males have much larger eyes than the females, which look very different to the males. The tibiae are whitish.

Habitat

Damp areas with lush vegetation near water. The females need a blood meal to develop their eggs.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread, some species especially so in Scotland. Fairly common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

March to October.
