Field Grasshopper

Chorthippus brunneus

Description

Over all length 15 - 25mm. The side keels on the pronotum are sharply incurved.  Both sexes have wings that reach the end of the abdomen. Colours can be very variable with purple, green and brown and combinations of these colours.

Habitat

Generally prefers drier more open ground with bare earth and sparse vegetation that is open to the sunshine. On the reserve is found along path sides and on the dry end of the Slurry Lagoon.

Status and distribution

It is distributed throughout most of Britain and can be quite common on the reserve.

Best time to see

July to November.
