Essex Skipper
Thymelicus lineola
Description
Wingspan 26 - 30mm. The wings are mostly orange with a dark rear border. Very similar to Small Skipper but the antennae have a 'dipped-in-ink' black tip, most obvious on the underside.
Habitat
Tall flowery grasslands, where the adults feed on nectar and the caterpillars feed on grasses, mostly cock's-foot.
Status and distribution
Common and widespread in the south-east, less common further north and west. Fairly common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.
Best time to see
June to August.
