Description

Wingspan 27 - 34mm. A moth-like butterfly marked in greys and browns.

Habitat

Sheltered, sunny areas sometimes on bare ground. The larval food plant is Bird's-foot Trefoil, the larvae over-wintering as full grown caterpillars and pupating in the spring.

Status and distribution

Widespread but local throughout Britain. Uncommon in Nottinghamshire and first seen at Netherfield Lagoons in 2020.

Best time to see

May to August, in two broods.
