Yarrow Conch

Aethes smeathmanniana

Description

Wingspan 12 to 19mm. The ground colour can be white to pale yellow, with a brown crescent across the folded wings and a blotch towards the rear.

Habitat

Open scrubby habitats, hedgerows and woodland edge. Sometimes on river banks and brown-field sites, the larvae feeding on the seeds of Yarrow and Knapweed.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread throughout Britain. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to August.
