Thalpophila matura


Wing-span 38 to 46mm. Dark fore-wing with a thin white cross-line. Pale hind-wing with a dark brown border.


Grassland and grassy areas. The caterpillars feed on various grasses.

Status and distribution

Common and widespread through much of England except the West Country. Less widespread in Wales and much rarer in Scotland. Common in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

July and August.
