Small Yellow Underwing

Panemeria tenebrata

Description

Wingspan 19 to 22mm. The forewing is mottled with gres and browns with a light patch towards the rear of the front edge and a dark zig-zag line across the wing in front of it. The hind wing is pale yellow with a thick dark border.

Habitat

A grassland species of flowery meadows and grassy roadside verges. The larvae feed on the seed capsules of Mouse-ears.

Status and distribution

Local. Thinly distributed through England, Wales and southern Scotland. Uncommon in Nottinghamshire and at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see

May to June.
